thurie Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program will NOT be running a FY2012 competition, according to application contacts in the U.S. Department of Education, OPE (ope_javits_program@ed.gov). Whereas for FY2011, the application was posted online on August 13, 2010, with a deadline of September 30, 2010, no application has yet been posted and, worse yet, no acknowledgment of why this is the case, which turns out to be the suspension of the program due to the budget agreement for FY2012, has been provided online. As I recently found out, the only way to get an answer to the question 'Is there going to be a fellowship program this year?' is to call the office [Telephone: (202) 502-7542] as the management and program analysts are not allowed to provide a response via e-mail. Frustrated with the lack of transparency? Wasted time this summer drafting, or just thinking about, a personal statement? Tell the Student Service. Call (202) 502-7600 and register a complaint. No information is posted on http://www2.ed.gov/p.../applicant.html.
displayname Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 That's really unfortunate. I started to fear for the Javits when I found out about the Fulbright-Hays being canceled. I guess that doesn't leave much hope for the 2011 alternates, either.
kzyskowski Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Thurie, What was the response you got when you inquired? Who told you it is not running? My understanding was that it is running, but that it was consolidated with the GAANN program in Feb 2011 under the Obama budget. Please tell me what exact responses you got.
ECM Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 (edited) When I visited the Dept of Education's site below there was no information on the application deadline (which I thought odd since it seemed so early last year), however they expected to award a far less number of applicants. 180 2012FY instead of 218. Department of Education: Jacob K Javits That's a real bummer if they cut the Javits, it's pretty much the only aid a person can get first year outside of institutional funding in an MFA program. gradwoes Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 So some updates. 1) Most likely no Javits FY2012. 2) Liaison in my department says that there's enough money to fund current fellows for FY2011 and FY2012. After that, who knows. 3) Emailed them about alternates for FY2011 (never heard back from them). Here's what they had to say: "Thanks for your email. At this time, the few alternates we can support have been contacted. We do not anticipate contacting any additional alternate candidiates." So, that's it, folks! Goodbye Javits!
spivak_khayesh Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 The cancellation of Javits is noted on several university websites, e.g. http://www.fellowships.buffalo.edu/awards/administered/javits.php
