neutiquamerro Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 start reviewing applications? Any idea?
IvyHope Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 The ad comm in my department is still waiting on the graduate secretary to complete files. They have their first meeting next Tuesday. The deadline was Jan 1. I believe.
slothy Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I know of at least four with 12/15 deadlines that have started the process of making their first cuts...
CAPoliSciPhD Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 How do you know this? And that kind of scares me...
IvyHope Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Why does that scare you? They have to make decisions at some point! I know this because I am close with one of the faculty that is on the admission committee at my school.
neutiquamerro Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 One of my recommenders submitted her recommedation just last week. Is that too late to be added to my file? Eee!
IvyHope Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 One of my recommenders submitted her recommedation just last week. Is that too late to be added to my file? Eee! Who knows? You didn't give any indication of deadlines. If they are already meeting to discuss applicants, then probably.
samoth Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I understood from a faculty member of a department whose deadline was 12/15 that they start reviewing applications at the end of January, and they intend to send decisions out in the second week of February. I guess it depends on the deadline, and on the dates they plan to make decisions by. Try looking up the departments you applied to in the results search, so you'll get an idea of when you should expect an answer.
neutiquamerro Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 I'm worried about Berkeley, Chicago, and Columbia since their deadlines were in the middle of December. I guess I'll see what happens. Oh, and good idea samoth. I'll look them up. Also, if you want to know anything about Yale just let me know.

I saw that last year's decisions were made in late February, so we still have a lot of nail-biting to do.
neutiquamerro Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 I'm an undergraduate at Yale, so I know the school (and sociology department) pretty well. I didn't apply here for grad school though.
misterpat Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I'm an undergraduate at Yale, so I know the school (and sociology department) pretty well. I didn't apply here for grad school though. This isn't really related to graduate study, but I was wondering if students from other disciplines at Yale are snooty towards Sociology folks. Especially since Yale's sociology department isn't one of its best departments. When I was thinking about applying there, I wondered if people would roll their eyes when I told them what I studided (this isn't why I didn't apply, I chose to go to grad for History).
sabana15 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 fyi: i just got an e-mail from Rochester (poli sci) that they were reviewing my application (and that part was missing )
misterpat Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 fyi: i just got an e-mail from Rochester (poli sci) that they were reviewing my application (and that part was missing ) Did you use all the same recommenders those applications in all those different disciplines? Were you afraid that applying all over the place might make them think you are unstable/unsure of what you wanted to do?
sabana15 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Did you use all the same recommenders those applications in all those different disciplines? Were you afraid that applying all over the place might make them think you are unstable/unsure of what you wanted to do? unstable? ouch! no, I'm not worried. My undergrad adviser was fantastic and told me to apply to programs where there were good potential advisers doing what I wanted to do--hence the variety. however, i did honestly wonder whether the programs to which I applied would think I was unstable, so I tried to 'shield' them a bit on the 'where else are you applying part.' for example, i listed pol sci/social sci together, anthropology/social sci together, but i tried not to put down ALL the programs so i'd appear more focused to potential programs. btw, does anyone know the purpose of the 'where are you applying' portion? i put a blend of schools/rankings but i didn't provide a comprehensive list.
Tritonetelephone Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 btw, does anyone know the purpose of the 'where are you applying' portion? i put a blend of schools/rankings but i didn't provide a comprehensive list. I was wondering that, too. Maybe if they have 2 students they're trying to decide between, they can call up the other schools and ask if one of them was given an offer? Something like that? Wishful thinking, I'm sure. Both of the schools that asked me that barely gave me enough character space for the initialisms of my other 9 schools... so maybe they just want to know if they are your one and only shot? I also thought that they might expect to see certain schools on your list, based on your research interests, so maybe it would confirm how well you picked schools based on fit? We should ask this in the general applications boards.
IvyHope Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I'm sure it's just for statistical purposes. They don't call around asking where else you're going to be accepted. They don't have time for that.
neutiquamerro Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 This isn't really related to graduate study, but I was wondering if students from other disciplines at Yale are snooty towards Sociology folks. Especially since Yale's sociology department isn't one of its best departments. When I was thinking about applying there, I wondered if people would roll their eyes when I told them what I studided (this isn't why I didn't apply, I chose to go to grad for History). I wouldn't worry about that for a couple of reasons: First, Yale is social sciences and humanities-heavy at the graduate level. Its very top-ranked programs are English, history, psychology, economics, political science, etc. The only similarly ranked programs are professional, such as law and art. Most people, whether of the social sciences, humanities, hard sciences, or professional variety, know this. Second, there are some natural divisions between the social sciences and the humanities and the sciences (schools/department/lab locations are a big factor in this, for example), so there's less chance of that happening in the first place. Third, Yale is a very relaxed place overall. The snottiness that one would automatically associate with the university just isn't there when people from different departments do interact with one another. And lastly, depending on your subfield, Yale's sociology department is great. It has some of the best memory studies folk in the world, for example. It's small, yes, (ironically, mostly because one of our former Presidents who tried to gut the department - and others in the humanities and social sciences - to free up funding, space, etc. for the hard sciences), but it's very solid.
misterpat Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Interesting. Shows how little I know about Ivy-culture, I suppose. I was mostly generalizing from my experiences from undergrad though. Whenever I told someone I studied Sociology, the reaction was usually "Uh... Why?" I figured that attitude might be heightened at an elite college.
samoth Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Happens to sociology students all around the globe.... I got that response many times.

doctoraldude Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 completely unrelated question: does cornell update its documents page ? i am one of those last minute types - and the gfa's email reticence is doing me no good at all
limeinthecoconut Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 completely unrelated question: does cornell update its documents page ? i am one of those last minute types - and the gfa's email reticence is doing me no good at all They updated my document status on Embark after more than three weeks. But that's for history. Not so sure about sociology.
international Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 completely unrelated question: does cornell update its documents page ? i am one of those last minute types - and the gfa's email reticence is doing me no good at all they updated mine about a week after the deadline so i guess yes...
