Liz Reynolds Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I'm a little late to the discussion, but I applied for Beginner Korean! I just finished my first semester of college Korean, and I'm taking Korean II next semester
fso2k11 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 (edited) I applied for advanced beginning Persian. We'll see what happens! We're supposed to hear back by early March, right? Did last year's batch hear back any earlier than that? Edited December 29, 2011 by blingem
Anthro14 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 Not really. I got an email around this time last year saying "Congratulations, your application has been passed on to the 2nd round of decisions." But I didnt hear about the final decision until March
Anthro14 Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 i just checked my old emails, i received the 1st round notification last year on Jan 10th.
KT Stanko Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I'm also applying. I'm a sophomore undergrad and attempting to get into beginner's Turkish. I went to Turkey last year and absolutely loved it!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I also applied for Russian, ajollycossack, but intermediate level (I assume anyway haha). I got my first rejection last year so I'm hoping for a different tune this time! My application was much better haha more of a focus on how I plan to conintue language learning. I'm a graduating senior (looking at REES M.A. programs for the fall, hopefully)
fso2k11 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I just heard back - passed the first-round review for a CLS in Persian. Anyone have any idea (or even just speculation) as to how many people pass the first round relative to the number of slots?
Liz Reynolds Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I just heard back - passed the first-round review for a CLS in Persian. Anyone have any idea (or even just speculation) as to how many people pass the first round relative to the number of slots? I have no idea how many people get past the first round. I didn't, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean much.
pureproduct Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I just heard back - passed the first-round review for a CLS in Persian. Anyone have any idea (or even just speculation) as to how many people pass the first round relative to the number of slots? Just heard back too and passed the first round for Beginning Korean! Holy cow, I was not concerned one way or the other about this--thrilled to get it, fine without it--but now the levels of advancement have my stomach in knots.
pureproduct Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 According to the website, "approximately one third" are advanced to the next round. The congrats letter said there were more than 5200 applications, so if the 1/3 ratio holds, there are still more than 1700 of us! Damn.
Johnnyquest2009 Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I just heard today that I made it to the next round. According to Wiki, they accept 575 people, so we now have a 33% shot.
hupr Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Just got a letter yesterday about advancement to 2nd round for advanced Arabic. It says I'll know something by mid-February.
giftedgothic Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 Congratulations to everyone! I got to the next level for beginning Turkish. My letter didn't say anything about how many applied vs how many were moved on, so I'm kinda on pins and needles right now.
