Anybody with experience in this? Anybody interested in perhaps reviewing an essay for this in return for a review of theirs?

Sure, I'd be happy to. I'll send you a PM. Should we have an "internal deadline" to exchange essays on Dec. 1?

That would be great. If anyone else wants to join in, please let us know, it's always helpful to have more people look at your paper.

So, GRE scores are "strongly encouraged," but my GRE scores are kinda low (470V, 800A ,4.5W). Should I even submit them? Would sending them help or hurt me? Thanks!

Has anyone found any DOE SCGF sample essays?

The only sample essay I've found is by Kyle Fox, on this website.

Submitted! Who else applied? :)

So, who applied? How'd it go?

Wasn't too bad. I applied for NSF GRFP a 2nd time around and it was a little bit of a re-hash of that. But the whole app wasn't horrible, but it also wasn't my best. I was really pushed for time and just plain lazy. I see you also applied to all the biggies. Let's say you got them, which would you take? Isn't DOE CSGF the most? Lucky you are do something in CS ...

Hmm, good question. I'd probably be happy with any of the fellowships.

If I had the opportunity to choose any of the fellowships... CSGF has a lot of requirements, such as adhering to a pre-planned set of coursework. I'm kind of a "do it my own way" person. So, I would probably prefer SCGF, NDSEG, or NSF.

I also applied. Has anyone heard anything? The website said that people would be notified in May, but I am also curious if there is a second round of materials or interviews for finalists and when that process might occur.

Just bumping the thread. Has anyone heard anything yet? It seems like a lot of fellowships announced already, but they appear to be sticking tight with the May announcement. Anyone been able to get contact with them about it?

If the DOE SCGF doesn't give out awards until after the NSF commit date, does that mean that more people who weren't offered NSF awards might have a better shot at the DOE...?

Not a thing. I've emailed them and heard nothing. They're particularly tight lipped, not even saying "early" or "late" May.

does anybody know about the odds of winning this fellowship? I applied for it, but have been figuring it's very competitive and unlikely. But I realized that I actually don't know any statistics.

According the pdf linked below, in FY2010, there were over 3,200 applications and 150 awards, so less than 5%. It sounds like the aim is to continue giving 150 awards. As this fellowship ages, more people will know to apply and the number of applications may go up, but I don't know by how much.

Page 5 of PDF "Over 3,200 applicants applied for the 3-year fellowship awards. A rigorous merit-based review and selection process resulted in 150 awards to outstanding graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in areas of basic research relevant to Office of Science mission areas."

Page 7 of PDF "The goal of the SCGF program is to eventually support a total of 450 Fellows in steady state, with a new cohort of 150 Fellows each year."

Jeez. Judging by the lack of activity on this thread I was starting to get hopeful about a smaller number of applicants, but those odds are worse than ndseg

Just got the call today. Good luck to those on the thread as it appears we should start hearing now...

Congratulations!!!

So, are they calling people alphabetically? What is the first letter of your last name, if you don't mind me asking???

I am not sure, it was a pretty quick call. My last name starts with T. I am not sure it was done that way in 2010 though, so it could be a mixed bag.

Wow, has anybody else gotten a phone call? Did they follow up with an email or any info about logging into their site? Congratulations.

I applied for this as well, I haven't heard anything yet.

Congrats usf2242. Would you care to specify your area of research and your current institution?
