DAAD Study Grant

To be honest, I'm not sure why there isn't a topic that's already started on this, but basically I applied for the DAAD study grant to the University of Passau for their International Relations program, and I'm essentially trying to determine what kind of a shot I have at this point. I can't seem to find anything on the competition statistics from years past, although the program did say it was about 1 in 4 last year. Although, competition changes every application cycle, and it'd just be good to get some dialogue going regarding this. Supposedly we hear back in March regarding the results.

you didn't get the fulbright yet, you've only been recommended. ;-) you also cannot hold both the fulbright and daad at the same time. if you win both you will only be able to accept one.

we will hear either the last week of march or first week of april. they usually run around the same schedule at the german fulbright commission.

really? i think that it's pretty obvious that i didn't get the fulbright, and that anyone who spends 5 minutes on this board/has any knowledge of the fulbright process would understand that my saying "got the fulbright" would be a kind of shorthand for making the first round (you yourself used similar language to indicate that you didn't make the first round, although i suppose that really does mean you didn't get the fulbright).

also, i know that i can't hold two grants for the same project, or a fulbright and a daad at the same time. i didn't ask you about that, but i guess thanks?

Thanks for the responses. I'm interested in what your proposals looked like. In reading the instructions, I assume that most people designed a research project and then made an argument for why a specific university would be conducive to them completing that project. Mine was much more vague and didn't mention a specific research proposal, but rather how study in Germany in a specific program would figure into my academic and career goals. The application essentially thrown together at the last minute, because of some logistical complications, and I'm concerned that this is most likely another dead end.

I guess here is what it says on the site:

Applicants for Master's programs should have a study proposal explaining why a particular program has been chosen and how it will further the applicant's educational and career goals. As German university deadlines are later than our deadline, you may not have yet been admitted to a German university; however, if already enrolled in Germany and applying for the second year of the Master’s, applicants must submit evidence of admission to a German university. Those beginning their Master’s do not need to submit any evidence of contact with a German institution.

Applicants for independent study are expected to have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential and should have an invitation from an academic partner at a German university or research institution. Scholarship recipients are required to complete two courses per semester and obtain "Scheine" (certificates of credit) for them.

i believe i have applied for a different version of the grant than both of you. there are several different avenues offered by the daad, unlike the fulbright. the fine arts application has a completely different process and requirements.

If I can just put in my two cents -

Last year, I applied for both Fulbright and DAAD (and "got", received, was awarded) both. Most profs I talked to said to take the Fulbright as it was more prestigious. And since both paid the same amount of money, it didn't really matter. I was really surprised at how simple the DAAD app was - I copied and pasted my personal statement and statement of grant purpose into the DAAD one. Apparently that turned out to be a "much better essay" than the Fulbright - which was lame since I spent about 6 months on that Fulbright app!

Anyways, I heard about DAAD like a month before Fulbright. I think I got an email from DAAD in Feb/March saying I was recommended for it and should get stuff in the mail. Then I heard from Fulbright early-mid March (if I recall ... it was during spring break). All I can say is that the wait sucks, but b/c you applied to Germany, you guys are usually the first to hear of anything!

Best of luck!

seems like maybe some different DAAD grants are all being discussed here. For the undergraduate grant about 1 in every 4 applicants is accepted. For the Graduate Study Grant, it is much heavier competition as far as I can tell (I was at the meeting for DAAD recipients back in October and I think they said something like 1 in 15 or so, but I'm not positive about that number). Anyway I received the undergraduate grant last year and have applied now for the graduate study grant... my partner received it last year and I think he was notified on March 8th, which was a bit earlier than the "late March" date they mentioned on their website -- I think it varies from year to year, though, depending on how busy their office is: decisions were slightly late for the undergraduate grants last year and I didn't receive notification until early May.

would also be interested in seeing what other peoples' proposals looked like, if anyone is interested in swapping :)! I'm a little stressed about hearing back since I haven't applied for anything else for next year ...

The Graduate Study Grant was what I inquired about when I contacted their offices, and the program director said the acceptance rate was roughly 1 in 4 last year. Saying that, the competition statistics are subject to change every year, but I highly doubt it would be 1 in 15. Additionally, when I called and inquired specifically about when the decisions would be reached for this grant, they said we will hear back in early April. Essentially, the inquiry regarding the date we hear back was basically an attempt to see if what they have on the website, which says we hear back at earliest in late March, was on target or whether we should expect to hear back later. I hope this brings some clarity to the discussion regarding those two components of the application.

Okay, I called today just to ascertain a few more variables in order to help us gauge our chances of getting the DAAD grant. The individual I spoke with today stated that there were about 700 people who applied this year and there are roughly 200 spots. It seems like it is definitely competitive, but not 1 in 15. Apart from that, she now stated that the applications are still in review and we're likely to hear back in May now. It'd be great if someone would check on this to verify this is when we hear back. I suggest calling the New York Office: http://www.daad.org/page/contact/ as this is where they process the applications.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi all,

So any news anyone?

FranzisKaner, I called DAAD a few days before you did (maybe around Feb 10ish), and the lady said we should hear back in March. Are you sure you couldn't have misheard? May sounds pretty bad...

Also, about 200 spots. Doesn't sound realistic either - last year there were ~165 scholarships granted (excluding the Arts ones), and that was after an announced budgetary increase! In 2010 and 2009 there were about 150. So, unless a drastic increase happened, there's no reason to expect 200... (Not that I'm not rooting for more scholarships & better chances!)

Anyway, let's keep each other posted in case anyone hears anything?
