spsych Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 Hello, For those of you who applied to the social psych prog at columbia or nyu, I was wondering if you got any response from them. Someone posted on the results survey that columbia sent an email today but it doesnt tell which psych prog it is... Thanks!
stereopticons Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I also applied to NYU Social and haven't heard anything.
Tarrant Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Applied to Columbia as well, but I've yet to hear anything.
spsych Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Thanks for the replies! Hopefully, they will notify the applicants soon. Those two are my top choice schools... *sigh* I wonder how competitive the admission is this yr... Well, good luck everyone!

ngj Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I also applied for NYU social psychology. So nervous waiting for an interview right now. I also applied for CUNY graduate center...sigh...no news and I realized that I should have got rejected...these two are the programs that I wanna get into...I am wondering if GRE really matters (V:520; Q:680)...'cause I think I have high GPA (3.6) and solid research experiences (4> yrs after undergraduate)...

I also applied to CUNY, but I didn't get an interview so I'm assuming that I got rejected. I also have 4 years of experience, similar GPA and a GRE score of 1500+. Who is your POI in NYU?
BlueCamel Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 anyone know when NYU generally sends out interviews?
spsych Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) anyone know when NYU generally sends out interviews? I called the admissions and they said that they "might" send it next week. Edited January 21, 2012 by spsych

I also have 4 years of experience, similar GPA and a GRE score of 1500+. Who is your POI in NYU? Andersen and West. I am very interested in Andersen work. So far, I got rejected by UCLA, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, and CUNY already...I am waiting for NYU, Uni of Houston, Uni of South Florida, and Uni of Chicago...I hope I can at least get into Uni of Houston or Uni of South Florida...they are my backup schools.

I also applied to work with West but not hoping much
ngj Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I also applied to work with West but not hoping much I had emailed her twice in Oct and Nov...but she never replied me. Andersen did reply me in detail and she seems to me a very nice person. I first encountered her work when I was in college long lont time ago. Thus, I really am interested in joining her lab and working with her. I wish GRE is not that important...sigh...I thought solid research experience could replace bad GRE score...in fact, I have taken the GRE twice and the second time was even worse than the first one...do PhD programs usuallly look at your most recent score or simply your best score?

Yea West never replied me as well, but Van Bavel is my POI. My GRE wasn't great either... so yea we are on the same boat
svh Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I just made contact with the admissions committee at NYU. They said most likely, invites will be coming this next week, and interview weekend would be March 1st-3rd.
spsych Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Hope to hear good news next week! Good luck, everyone!
mmm2 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I also applied to NYU and Columbia for social psych! I've heard that Columbia pulls REALLY heavily from its own MA students for their psych PhD programs. I know for certain this is the case w/ Teachers College (clinical), but does anyone know if it is or isn't also true of the GSAS?

beachgirl Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I have actually heard the opposite about NYU...they like to get in new blood for PhDs. But that is in the Counseling Psych area....Social might be different.

Teachers College (TC) is a different animal than Columbia's Psychology department, which hosts Columbia's social psychology PhD program. By different animal, I mean different graduate school within greater Columbia, different philosophies, different admissions processes. I think TC does pull some of their MA students into the related PhDs (such as clinical, counseling, and social-organizational psychology), but this isn't the case in the psych department (neuroscience, social psych, cognitive, etc), as it does not contain a terminal master's degree. Therefore, I'd say it's not true of GSAS. Edited January 30, 2012 by arieshine prefers_pencils 1
