  1. I started in the fall, and it was fine. You could do it in the summer and if no one responds to you or if they don't know yet, do it again in the fall.
  2. Don't think about attaining a minimum. Just try to nail a perfect score. Just practice A LOT. And try not to take it more than two or three times.
  3. Hi, I lived in DC for four months, and I gotta say that I loved it. However, I lived in the northeast quadrant which is the safest area of DC. You could maybe live closer to the west side and commute? The transit system is really good in DC. However, if you're not all that passionate about Howard, then I would say don't do it. In terms of going for a masters or not, I don't know what to tell you. You should ask your advisors. When meeting people at interviews, a lot of them either had a masters or spent more than a few years after college doing research and lab managing at either their UG institution or some other one. Not many came straight out of UG.
  4. Can people with experience tell me if they think this is a good idea, or is it better to room with someone from a different department?
  5. yeah, nyu! housing on manhattan just seems ridiculous. i seriously think a good option is jersey city, either in historic downtown or in hoboken. i've seen two bedrooms for less than $2000. then, it's just a fifteen minute path train ride to campus.
  6. Cornell is particularly competitive because they only take two graduate students a year. I went to their interviews this year (they interviewed six), and I was rejected.

    Need Help!

I think the answer is pretty obvious. Stay out of debt as much as possible.
  8. will be doing student housing. i'm afraid for when they kick us out of student housing. what if we can't find a place...? i think, ideally, you should look for apartments in the colder months cause that's when they're cheaper, but student housing is over during the summer. so... what do you do about that? pay two rents at the same time for five months? i don't think so.
  9. Did you get into NYU social psych? If so, I will see you there! Personally, I'd rather get married after grad school... Who can be ready at such a young age? Not me!
  10. There is a secondary POI that I would be highly interested in working with. I emailed him and he responded with something general but positive. I am fairly independent and my primary POI said that she'd be good about skype conversations and whatnot.
  11. I think the POI will be gone for most of Fall and will be in and out during Spring. During Spring, the POI doesn't have to teach but has to attend faculty meetings and brownbags.
  12. i just learned about this... what do you all think? i still have the option to go to a different school. any advice is appreciated.
  13. most definitely and let us know ASAP! =D
  14. I'd like to see a plot of your residuals.
  15. I like the time-series analysis up there. Very nice.
  16. Haha, it'd be a little weird to bring her. I don't think it would speak poorly about how young or professional you are though. It'd just be a little weird...
  17. I've been accepted to five programs and have one manuscript in the works but zero official publications (I'm an undergrad, by the way). I think if you're a masters student applying for PhD programs, they'll expect more publications from you than if you're an undergrad.
  18. That's a tough decision. Multiple interesting faculty is always good, just in case you don't jive very well with your primary advisor. But if the research interest fit is perfect at your other school... That's pretty important, too. However, from the grad student work that I've seen on my visits, it seems like you'll have a good amount of freedom to pursue what you're interested in (depending on how much freedom your primary advisor gives you, of course). But I've seen grad students do something almost completely unrelated to what their advisors are doing. In the end though, you should pick the school that'll make you the happiest. And when the programs are similarly good, you need to decide based on other more trivial factors (like location).
  19. So, we should choose the school that is the road less taken? hmm... haha
  20. Hehe, that's nice. Have you tried fitting the data to a curvilinear model? Maybe a log-linear one?
  21. Well, I wouldn't say money is NO issue. It's not an issue in that I won't go into debt either way. But it is an issue in terms of being comfortable and saving money. At school #1, I'd have to live like an undergraduate (no saving). At school #2, I could save away $60K in five years. But fit at school #1 is sliiiightly better...
  22. I don't think I'd accumulate debt either way. I think it really comes down to comfort, savings, being able to spend for trips, etc. Since I won't be taking any debt, what do you think then?
