Who posted that little blurb about Duke?
-
Thanks for the advice! I think I know what I should do now.

Another question for you, Watson. Suppose you've been accepted by a program. Then, a different program invites you to interview the same visiting weekend as the first. Since you've been accepted by the first program already, do you think it's okay to ask them to schedule a different time to visit (even though you've already told them you could probably make it) so that you can go to interview weekend for the second program? Now, if the first program was just interviewing, I would of course tell the second one I need to reschedule (since they took so dang long to get back to me). But the key here is that the first one already accepted me. Thanks for your responses. I'm sure all the people on here find your experienced answers helpful.

Hey thanks for the advice. Who do you study with at Northwestern?
-
I just made contact with the admissions committee at NYU. They said most likely, invites will be coming this next week, and interview weekend would be March 1st-3rd.

So was I. And I think I still will... You can always dress down a suit if you need to based on what everyone else is wearing. Just take off your jacket and your tie, just your jacket, or just your tie. You can also swap your suit pants for dark jeans and leave off the tie.
-
Are you saying to not wear a suit the interviews? And what do you mean by the comment about accepting without interviews. Are you saying that they accept you but won't take you unless you go to visiting weekend...?
-
might, huh? awesome...

My chances? Solid GRE/Mediocre GPA, opinion greatly appreciated

Your scores and gpa are pretty decent. The most important factor is research experience though. How much research experience do you have? What you should do is, aim for PhD programs and apply for masters programs at the same time. Ball State is another good fully funded program. -
The subway system in Hong Kong is the most efficient in the world. You wait 3 minutes tops at any given moment before you can board a train.
-
I hope you mentioned that in your letter (your work circumstances). And I hope your letter writers talked about it, too.
-
You're GRE (don't worry about your writing score) and GPA look good. Seems like you got good research experience, considering you've been published. Do you have research presentations (poster sessions, etc.)? UCD is UC Davis, right? Who's cognitive lab did you work in (just curious)? It also looks like you got two good letters from two good sources. How's your third? Overall, it looks like you should be able to get past the inital screening, so socihealth is right. I think it comes down your research interests and their fit with the faculty at your programs.

For the GRE, the key is to practice taking it. When I took it, I bought a prep book (Kaplan b/c they have a cd-rom with tests so that you can get used to taking it on the computer). I studied the strategies and whatnot out of the prep book, then I went to Barnes and Noble every single day for a month and a half and took practice tests out of the books there. I just brought a notebook, grabbed a book, and took the practice test in that book in the cafe. This is a much cheaper option than anything else, I think. And it's really effective if you do it everyday. The key is to do it everyday (at least one practice test a day).

I know exactly how you feel.

No response from either yet.

Hi all. I am also a first-generation college student, and my parents certainly were at one point in the working class. They are actually both refugee immigrants. When they started here, they didn't even know English. But they've worked really hard (three full time jobs and one part time job between the two of them) and allowed their kids to have a somewhat more comfortable upbringing. Based on our total income, we'd be middle class. But based on salary/money earned per hour, we're probably a lot lower. Going to undergraduate was pretty difficult. No one in my family had the experience to tell me what I needed to do. The counselors at my high school only told you to go to school in-state, which was not what I wanted to do. In the end, I couldn't afford to go out of state. I also didn't have anyone in my family to tell me how to get to grad school. But luckily, we have the internet. Using the internet, I found out everything I needed to know and have been pretty successful about it so far. Hopefully, with the internet, people from similar backgrounds as our's will be able to get all the information they need to achieve.

Who got the Columbia interview?
-
Just got an email from Ohio University. Interview dates to come or optional phone interview.
-
Hey, see you at the UVa interview!
-
Although, I might say that UVa offers have all been extended.
-
I don't know about Duke. I recall someone posted that they had a phone interview and today someone said they were rejected after a pre-interview (I assume it's the same one since they were both for soical psychology). Perhaps, they rejected people today, which would be good news for those of us who did not get a rejection today. I can't say for sure though. redheadblueheel, would you like to exchange POI information with me (over PM)?
-
I guess when in doubt, do both the POI and the graduate chair.

I actually have had something similar happen to me. I was just accepted to present at NCUR this spring. But I already feel like my application is good enough (meaning, I already have some presentations listed on my CV), so I don't feel like it's a big deal to add just one more (when I haven't even actually presented yet).
-
I suppose it depends on whether you've already had conference presentations in the past. They would probably care more about your experience presenting rather than simply being accepted to present. Although, ff you don't have any presentations in the past, I would say it would be good to send an updated CV with an explanation of what's changed. If you've already presented in the past, then I don't think it's as big of a deal, but it probably wouldn't hurt to update them. Just make sure you send an updated CV and not just an email stating that fact. Also, if you're going to do this, I'd probably do it sooner rather than later, as most schools are in the middle of reviewing applications now.
