MCS_aspirant Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I got into Stanford's aero-astro MSc program with intent to continue for PhD. I got an email invitation to their visit day. Does anyone know who pays for the travel expenses? The email doesn't say anything about it, it only asks you to RSVP. I definitely want to visit, but sometimes it looks cost-prohibitive (I am in another corner of the US).

When I was invited for a visit (to Michigan State), they explicitly told me how much they could provide for me to visit. I guess you could call them?
ilikecobbler Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 (edited) Hey MCS_aspirant. I got an email with acceptance and an invitation to the aero visit day a couple of days ago as well, though my email specifically stated that I would receive a travel reimbursement with attached forms to fill out. Are you an international student, because I've heard some schools don't offer travel reimbursements to people who don't live in the US? Edit: Just saw that your location was USA so obviously you aren't an international student. I would only assume that maybe they are really selective about giving out travel reimbursements? Have you already received an acceptance letter, or just the email? Edited January 26, 2012 by ilikecobbler
MCS_aspirant Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 I just got the email. The email said they will send a formal letter with details by March 15. However, I am an international student, but am doing my undergrad here in the US. There is no form in my email, it asks me to RSVP by emailing some guy. Thank you for the information though. I will wait to hear back from other schools, and decide whether to visit Stanford.
ilikecobbler Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Yeah, not a problem. Good luck in all your admissions endeavors! Fingers crossed for funding!

MCS_aspirant Posted January 31, 2012 Author Posted January 31, 2012 I got the same thing but no funding. I'll wait and see what happens with the other schools for now. Have you already got the letter? I assume you know about your funding only after getting the letter. At least, this is how it works for U-Michigan. Not sure how Stanford works. Can anyone clarify on this?
puertorrob Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 No. I was also told that an official letter with more information will be sent in March. That's probably the way it works. You'll get a more formal package in march. When did you hear about Michigan? I'm still waiting on that one.
MCS_aspirant Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 I heard back in December, but that's because I was in that professor's graduate class. You probably know that at Michigan, the professor gets to decide almost everything regarding admission.
sririitk Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Hello guys, Does anyone know what's the case with PhD applications in Stanford and Michigan. I haven't recieved any mail or postal communication from both. Should I consider my application rejected??
MCS_aspirant Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 A friend of mine who applied for MS (since he can't apply for a direct PhD to Stanford with only BSc) has already gotten a rejection mail (postal mail). The process for PhD applicants are different may be. And U-Michigan hasn't formally sent out decisions yet (as far as I know) unless under some special circumstances. They would take a while (early-mid March) based on last year's decision dates.
sririitk Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Thanks for the information. I have also applied to Caltech, MIT and Princeton and in fact had received a positive reply from a MIT prof who said he was awaiting my application. MIT grad office sent me a mail that my application was ready to be reviewed on Jan 12. How long do these univs take for PhD apps. And is it true that rejection mails are sent earlier than offer mails. I haven't received any from the above..
sririitk Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 And I also wanted to know if you have received a PhD call from Stanford. How many PhDs does Stanford take in a year?? I received a mail from grad office upon my query that decisions have been made and letters sent.. Does that mean rejection??
MCS_aspirant Posted February 5, 2012 Author Posted February 5, 2012 I haven't gotten any PhD call from Stanford. Also, I am starting Masters with intent to continue to PhD. Stanford won't give a direct PhD offer. I am not sure how long it takes. But last year's decision dates may be helpful to reduce your anxiety a bit. Caltech: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=caltech+aero* Princeton: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=princeton+aero*&t=a&pp=25 And you got a call from MIT? That's an achievement dude. Best of luck!
puertorrob Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Yeah, for Stanford I also applied for MS with intentions to continue for a PhD. I've heard from a friend that's at MIT right now that decisions for aero are sent around the last week of February.
sririitk Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Thanks MCS_applicant for the info. My anxiety levels were building up a lot !! I guess Princeton results would be the first to be out !! And any idea about Purdue, Georgia, UIUC and Penn State? These with the rest complete my application list!!

I don't have any specific info, may be someone who knows more about those schools can help. I would rely on last years results survey again http://thegradcafe.com/survey/ Just search something like "Purdue aero* " (without quotations but with the asterisk) on that page assuming you haven't use it before. I find it very helpful. Good luck!
puertorrob Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I go to Purdue and they mostly make decision in early march. But they can make them as early as Feb as sometimes. I think some of the kids that are graduating with me already got accepted, but I'm sure that's just because they already know them, etc.
puertorrob Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Hey did any of the people that got into Stanford go to the visit day today?
winmaxi Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I m in EE. My visit days are March 8 and 9th. is aero the same? Stanford will reimburse you for flight, transportation, hotel, and restaurants..... So rich.........................
puertorrob Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 (edited) Lol, maybe in EE they're rich. The aero visit day was on Friday (Feb 17th) and I was not offered any financial support. I ended up not going because Stanford is pretty far from Indiana and it would've been pretty expensive. Edited February 18, 2012 by puertorrob
