waitingforgodot Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I don't think visiting the school is a "must-do" by any stretch of the imagination. Most international students will be unable to visit anyway, and I don't think the university can discriminate against the students in the US who could have attended but did not (or could not).
pslice Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 word to the wise, many state programs are cutting back their admits if you havent noticed. there was a huge increase in the shear number of applicant for a decreasing number of spots. im a current PhD at one of the UC's and our dept is taking about half as many as last year( I think they took 11-12 last year, this year is 7 but maybe fewer). They are also taking fewer internationals; they just dont have the money to pay for them, let alone money for much else. just be prepared for that heavy-tail chance of not getting in...
zongzi Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Hi, I got into UC.Davis, Northwestern and UBC (all Ph.D programs), but haven't decided which one to go yet. Could you guys please give me some suggestions? Thank you very much.
dino88 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I have a quick one: Am I crazy to go to a top 10 Stats PhD over a truly interdisciplinary PhD at Stanford where they will let me take half my courses in the Stats dept. and get my masters in stats as well? I need a different perspective. Thanks!
skibum1981 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Depends on what your goals are, and also if you're able to get an adviser in the stats dept at Stanford... Did you apply to MS&E?

opsimath Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I see Columbia has sent out at least one Ph.D. rejection; I really wish they'd just get it over with and reject me so I could move on with my life.

waitingforgodot Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Call them. Yup. I was the "reject", and had to ask the admin asst. twice in the last couple of days before I got a reply. Best of luck to everyone who doesn't know yet.
quinn Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Eeek! I see that some people have heard back from Columbia and Northwestern... My guess is that I didnt make it with either. I don't know if I wanna call Columbia or just wait for the mailman to deliver my fate. I have no clue whether to go to Yale MA or LSE MSc.... What does everyone think between these two? Also, does anyone know anything about the JHU PhD App Math & Stat? I don't know if it would be a wise choice to go there, mostly cause I know very little about the program... Any advice about any of these three programs and comparing them would be greatly appreciated!

Chicago aside, said schools are not very good in comparison to Berkeley, Stanford, Univ of Washington, Duke, etc... and if you were going to apply to an ivy, Cornell should have probably been it (or Harvard if you want to do biostats).

I couldn't have gotten into any of those programs that you've mentioned. I doubt I will get into Chicago either; thought I minus well just give it a shot if I was going to apply for the MS anyways. Oh, and I also found out I got rejected from Columbia. So now I'm hoping basically hoping for Chicago MS. Still, my soul is being ripped apart by the decision between LSE or Yale Masters or the JHU PhD. What do you think?
waitingforgodot Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Hi Has anyone here heard from UMich? I applied there for a Masters in Applied Statistics, but haven't heard back. I e-mailed the administrative assistant more than a week ago, but was told that a decision on my application had yet to be made. I see only one reject on the boards (back from 11th March) and no admits, so I am not sure what's happening.

If you're paying either way, I'd do JHU b/c it's half off.
