Soc231160 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Does anybody know what the Rutgers interview is like? Getting nervous!!
ohhello Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 From the email it sounded pretty straightforward. Why does Rutgers appeal to you, and how will Rutgers help facilitate your graduate study? I think the interview will give us a chance to reiterate or expound upon why we applied to Rutgers in the first place, given that the SOP included such questions.
sociology27 Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I echo what ohhello said. It's just a fairly casual conversation about the things mentioned. Also, it's clear that they read your SOP, so be prepared to fill in any gaps or explicate on anything in there.
kbhaven Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 There are 7 interview offers posted so far (including myself) - way more than expected. Do you think that it would be quite competitive among those on the program's list of finalists for admissions? I actually thought that the telephone chat with DGS would be very much as the professor explains.
sociolog86 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I think they're interviewing people they aren't sure about.....
ohhello Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I think they're interviewing people they aren't sure about..... Hmmm?
sociology27 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Sociolog86, is there any particular reason you think that? The interview made it seem like they were interviewing everyone on their "short list," which does appear to be a pretty long short list, judging by the amount of invites.

I haven't heard back from Rutgers yet but would like to have an idea.
kbhaven Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Wondering where this list is posted? I haven't heard back from Rutgers yet but would like to have an idea. That's what I referred to "Results Search" in here. I think we've got one more - 8 interview invites so far.
wmnshlthsoc Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Any updates yet on acceptances or interviews... I'm nervous and praying to be in the second wave. rutgers is my top choice. i spoke to DGS a few weeks ago but that was before the application review began
Cup of Tea Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 My interviewer mentioned the committee meets this Friday.
kbhaven Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Here's what the DGS said: roughly 40 interview invites, 20 acceptance offers. I don't think I'm gonna go. Got a better offer.
ohhello Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 (edited) The interview was cordial and friendly - it made me more excited about the Rutgers program. They'll send out admission results in around 2 weeks. Edited February 7, 2012 by ohhello
sociology27 Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Was accepted to today with 5 years funding. It was a personalized email though so I wouldn't worry if you haven't received on yet.
kbhaven Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I was accepted too, but received an email on Sunday. The DGS (also my PoI) seems incredibly nice, doesn't she? I think she's sending out very personalized emails to every single applicant. I didn't post this one on the board, so I assume that there will be more guys who think of her as a prospective advisor.
heulwen Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Congratulations, guys. I was also interviewed but haven't got any acceptance or rejection messages yet. I have a bad feeling about this.
MarxianSociologist Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I just received my acceptance email, so I wouldn't start worrying just yet. As others have said, it seems that the DGS is personalizing each email.

As others have said, it seems that the DGS is personalizing each email. Hope so. The interview went well, at least that's what I thought.. In each case, I want to find out as soon as possible. I'm just too tired of refreshing my email in every 5 minutes.
heulwen Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 ... and I don't like this personalizing business either. Why can't they socialize with their admits at a later stage? Just send out the results and the rest of us will start to think what to do with our lives
wmnshlthsoc Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Any other news from Rutgers? It's my number one choice and I'm just praying for news soon... One way or the other I'd like to know what to expect. heulwen 1

heulwen Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Hey guys It's me who got admitted to Rutgers without funding. It was a personalized email from the person who interviewed with me, and I received her message right after I sent her an email asking about my situation. I don't know whether to be happy or sad about this. Does this "being in the funding waitlist" ever work for anyone? I can't possibly go there without funding.

kbhaven Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I think the likelihood of your being funded would be quite high. As I posted above after an interview, DGS said that there would be twenty or something who get admitted to the program. I don't think all of them will decide to go with Rutgers. At least, you are on the funding waitlist, not rejected. Hopefully you'll end up going there. Keep your fingers crossed.
