fraek88 Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 hey... as far as I know Duke does not offer any kind of funding to international students (other than TA's or RA's)... @abhi_shake - please do share anything you get to know... I had the same questions as you... lol @xfluux - I would personally choose Duke They had recommended completing the compulsory internship before joining.. is that possible to do if I am presently in my final year of undergrad and am graduating in June? Also, has anyone had a look at housing? On campus or off? Looking forward to seeing you guys this fall as well
George2248 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Hey I got admitted but now I am in the decision process and maybe you could help me out: I applied to 2 very different programs, but I really like both: 1. UIUC: Construction Management Program, ranked 3rd in Civil Engineering. 2. DUKE: Master in Engineering Management, ranked 20ish in Engineering, but the MEM program is associated with MIT, Stanford, Dartmouth and others. Also Duke is ranked better overall. One important factor for me is the possibility of getting a job in the US after graduating, since I am an international student. With this in mind, what would you think matter most? overall ranking? field ranking? program associated with Ivy leagues? Basically what I am asking is for an outside opinion, what would you do if you were me?
Jon1415 Posted March 31, 2012 Author Posted March 31, 2012 I'd go with Duke - its associated with the other MEMPC schools which increases the value of your degree. I noticed you're in Construction Management - and there is a Civil Engineering concentration available within the MEM program in Durham.

Yes I would like to follow that concentration in case I go to Duke, but now I have another good problem: I got accepted to a MS in Construction Engineering and Management in Columbia. I find very helpful the employment rates and statistics for Duke's MEM, but I cant find that info for Columbia. Now comparing Duke with and Ivy league like Columbia, where would you go? I really like the variety of Duke's MEM program but Columbia is very tempting...

I think you should look into the individual courses for Duke's Civil Engineering MEMP concentration and compare it to the curriculum at Columbia. Which courses are better suited for your career aspirations? Columbia is Ivy - are you looking for that kind of label? Also, a pretty big factor - are you interested in living in a smaller college setting in NC, or are you looking for the busy city atmosphere in NYC? They are great schools... congratulations on getting admitted to both! If you're looking for statistics for Columbia MSCE graduates, I'd try contacting this guy (he was listed in the FAQ section on the program website): Who should I call or email for more specific information on the Construction Engineering and Management Program? Contact Julius Chang (jc1041@columbia.edu).

Thanks a lot for the info and advice, For now I think I am going with Columbia, I am trying to check housing which seems a lot more expensive and that could be a big factor.
