deleteduser0333 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) My mother has got a BSc in physics and my dad is a professor in non-linear optics. May have great connections if I would ever apply for science and engineering but apparently I am a case of genetic mutation as I suck at maths and sciences. (I am Asian, sigh.) shavasana Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 To add: my mom took a couple of college accounting classes, but doesn't have anything more than a high school diploma. My DAD, on the other hand, went to school forever. BS in Mechanical Engineering, MBA, and then his JD. ...and he's giving me grief about getting a PhD. shavasana 1
Jwnich1 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Father is British and left school at 16. Through a long chain of events (and a lot of self learning) he's been quite successful Mom is a college grad, with 3 masters degrees to her name, and will be in starting a PhD program in a different field. Also: Inspector Morse is amazing. As is Lewis on his own. - and of course my favorite Midsommer Murders.

Yes I just saw it last week, did you enjoy it? I heard they're considering turning it in to a "young Morse" series. I need something to fill the void now that I've seen all of Sherlock - maybe this will do it. Edited February 19, 2012 by Jwnich1 whirlibird 1

No, seriously, that's all it takes to make me happy.
Megan Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 Just wanted to tell you that you rock because you've even mentioned Sherlock. No, seriously, that's all it takes to make me happy. I'm so glad I'm not the only person who loves this. I think it might be my favorite television program of all time. No exaggeration. I also love Benedict Cumberbatch, and love him even more for having a name like Benedict Cumberbatch.

And I get passionate about my favorite programs, so this is a big deal. Cumberbatch for the win! (Martin Freeman, too!)

Thanks! Absolutely brilliant TV - best I've seen in a long time. I wish there were more than 6 episodes though. Season 3 promises to be fantastic, but at only 3 a season, there are long gaps to fill. I've got to say I thought I was probably the only one obsessed with relatively obscure British TV (well, obscure if you're in the States!) Edited February 19, 2012 by Jwnich1
balderdash Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I watched all 6 episodes of Sherlock in the first 7 days of February. Fantastic show.
wordshadow Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 (edited) My dad served in the Navy for a while back in the late 80s and has taken some college level courses in Spanish/English to help boost his pay at his current job, but has never had anything all that formal in his post-secondary education. My mom went to college back in the 70s, dropped out and then entered again five years ago and is currently pursuing her Masters in Health Information Management. My sister went to NYU to get her B.A. and is currently trying to gain more research experience before she applies for Ph.D. programs in Psych. Edited February 19, 2012 by wordshadow

Perish the thought! I watched all 6 episodes of Sherlock in the first 7 days of February. Fantastic show. Similar experience, though at the end of January, right after the 6th had come out. Check out this amazing solidarity! (I realize we're grossly off-topic, though...sorry everybody!) Jwnich1 1

(I realize we're grossly off-topic, though...sorry everybody!) Very much off topic! My apologies as well! I did much the same thing. It was what I did after the stress of writing my SOP. If some of us end up in the same program, I can tell what some evenings are going to be used for! (assuming there is ANY downtime whatsoever)
RWBG Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I watched all 6 episodes of Sherlock in the first 7 days of February. Fantastic show. To jump on the bandwagon; Sherlock is definitely fantastic. All of you who haven't seen it are bad people. DualCitizenIR 1

potbellypete Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 both parents with GED. First in family to go to college, then masters, and now PhD. However, I will earn nothing even close to my parents after graduating with my PhD in Political Science
puddle Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Both parents have PhDs... brother finishing his PhD and then going to med school... dad is at the top of his field. All in sciences. I guess you could call me the black sheep for going into social sciences. Baahhhhhh
