ewurgler Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Talked to the DGS this morning...said they will be making decisions this week!!
slothy Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 That's about what I expected based on history...
widefellow Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 How many students are they going to admit, anybody has any ideas? Will they admit a gay asian undergraduate majoring in English? haha Did you all get interviews? coz I didnt get one.
readyforachange Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Ack! Was the interview you had mostly about "why soc?" like you thought it might be? Or talking more about your research interests, etc.? (if you feel like sharing )
ewurgler Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 She said their target cohort size is 12-14. I don't think they interviewed everyone, and it wasn't much of an interview, mainly making sure it was the right program for me.
ewurgler Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 I meant "they didn't interview everyone" to mean that I don't think they interviewed everyone on the short list. I didn't have a soc background, and I think they wanted to make sure I was committed to it. They say explicitly on their site that they don't interview. don't worry!!!
widefellow Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Thanks man I am an undergraduate majoring in English from China, no papers nor research experience with gre scores of 590v 800q 4aw I dont know why I applied to high ranking schools. already rejected by UCLA and UIC Thats life.
Tritonetelephone Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Talked to the DGS this morning...said they will be making decisions this week!! If they're making decisions this week, does that mean we won't be notified until next week? Just putting that out there so people don't start freaking out as we get closer and closer to Friday. Btw, I didn't get interviewed and I'm still hopeful. You should be too. Good luck, everybody!!
ewurgler Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 She said "ill be in touch later in the week," so I hope they notify this week! She said they were meeting in a few days to make "final decisions" GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!!!!!!
misterpat Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Will they admit a gay asian undergraduate majoring in English? haha No. Sociology programs are notorious for discriminating based on race and sexual orientation. Also, Indiana Sociology has explicitly stated that they do not like people who understand literature. It's in the FAQs.
hip2btriangle Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 for all your LGBTQwhatevers out there, i'm getting the sense that most sociology departments are full of queer people. it's awesome! i'm surprised i had no idea it'd be a little tolerant haven...

Is most of academia typically considered to be a bastion of social conservatism?
ewurgler Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Is most of academia typically considered to be a bastion of social conservatism? haha...no. Social sciences and humanities are the bane conservative existence. Have you seen those books with titles like "101 radical liberal professors poisoning the youth of america"?
synthla Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 haha...no. Social sciences and humanities are the bane conservative existence. Have you seen those books with titles like "101 radical liberal professors poisoning the youth of america"? That's what I'd been anticipating, so I wasn't sure about the source of the tone of surprise in the other post. Sure can't wait to poison the youth of america with all my intellectualism.

Sure can't wait to poison the youth of america with all my intellectualism. well, i mean, i went to a pretty conservative undergrad in virginia (of the rock-throwing variety) and i'm slowly but surely opening my eyes up to the world of crazyliberal academia. i'm stoked!
synthla Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 well, i mean, i went to a pretty conservative undergrad in virginia (of the rock-throwing variety) and i'm slowly but surely opening my eyes up to the world of crazyliberal academia. i'm stoked! I think you're in for a much more pleasant graduate experience. Good luck with all of your applications!
Tritonetelephone Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Sure can't wait to poison the youth of america with all my intellectualism. Me too! I'm really excited about spreading my neoliberal agenda through America's youth with such radical ideas as "poor people DON'T choose to be poor." Who knew!
waitinginohio Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 spreading my neoliberal agenda through America's youth with such radical ideas as "poor people DON'T choose to be poor." Who knew! wait, do you have your own type of neoliberal? or do we have very different understandings of what neoliberal means? I know LOTS of poor people who have been fucked over by the neoliberal agenda...
ewurgler Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 wait, do you have your own type of neoliberal? or do we have very different understandings of what neoliberal means? I know LOTS of poor people who have been fucked over by the neoliberal agenda... I was thinking the same thing!!!! It has to be a different understanding of neoliberal.
misterpat Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 LOL. It's posts like these that make you one of my favorites, misterpat. Thanks. At least someone appreciates me. If you don't mind, e-mail the History Graduate Directors at UVA, UMich and UChicago and let them know about my delightful personality.
misterpat Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I was thinking the same thing!!!! It has to be a different understanding of neoliberal. Some people mistakenly use neo-liberal as a synonym for New Left. Whereas the "liberal" in neo-liberal actually stems from "classic liberal", which advocates laissez-faire economic policies and such.
migrationdude Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Haha, one of my profs actually made a list on the Young America Foundation's "10 most useless classes." He was teaching quite a good class on Marx, so the YAF people couldn't help a knee-jerk reaction when seeing that someone was actually asking if Marx should be given a second chance.
waitinginohio Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 migrationdude - that's awesome. Apparently the list has grown to the "dirty dozen" and it says about that particular class: "Taking Marx Seriously" - First line of the course description: "Should Marx be given another chance?" Marxist regimes have murdered over 100 million of their own citizens and enslaved hundreds of millions more. gah! Most of the other classes on the list look pretty sweet too!
