  1. PM me if you have specific questions regarding Draper.
  2. Forsaken, when I was applying for Masters in 2009, I got in Columbia anthro MA program, which was then a one year only program and it was super expensive. I finally went to NYU to get my Masters in an interdisciplinary program in humanities. That means, prior to this application circle, I did not have any specific theory or methodology training in anthro or any disciplinary program, and I always thought that was something that would put me on a bit of (probably tremendous) disadvantage. However I did get into two pretty good programs in anthro with funding and I also get into a Ph.D program in English (fully funded) - English is not even my first language! So all I want to say now, echoing one of the POIs that I visited a week ago, is that let your research speaks for itself. You can definitely go for a Latin American studies program now and craft a research plan that would get you into the anthro program that you want. In fact, You should go for any Master program with the mindset and confidence that it will lead you to a great Ph.D. Congratulations.
  3. Anyone want to claim the Irvine rejection? I emailed them earlier when they had first round of acceptances, and they had told me that they were going to have second round. My website says it does not display admission status, and that I should wait for email. Which website did you check your status. thanks.
  4. does anyone know anything from U Florida? Who wants to claim the acceptance? and Congratulations.
  5. Definitely go with B for me. It is exactly the situation/dilemma that I am going through. One of the professors at Santa Cruz and I almost share identical research interests, but I am provided no funding at all. It costs over 50K a year to attend UCSC, which is way beyond my capability to pay. I would say, I LOVE being in academics, but not to the point where everything else has to be forfeited.
  6. Hey there, like to know about columbia I well. I actually emailed them today but got no response.
  7. anyone else who also applied to UCSC and got good news? I got an email from DGS saying it is extremely difficult for them to fund international students, and it sounds like that I won't get financial support at all, and that non-resident tuition is almost twice as much as the regular resident tuition. If you are on the same boat with me, or know anything about the program, please let me know. I hope I can get the finance to work out. Thanks guys.
  8. Thanks Strudelle! People who still waiting to hear good news stay positive! This acceptance came after three rejections, so you will never know what will happen, thus you should never lose hope.
  9. Yeah! I have never been to the West, but I always hear great things about it. I have heard the campus has gorgeous views.
  10. Thanks! I know, that's a great program! I didn't think I stand a chance at all. Truth is, you will never know...
  11. Got in UC-Santa Cruz! My first Ph.D acceptance
  12. Wow, but I saw quite a few people got to know the result this way. Well......
  13. hey all, so when you email your POI regarding result, and he/she says it is a tremendous breach of protocol to reveal anything about the process or result, does that imply a rejection? It that common?
  14. Just got admitted into Brandeis! YAYAY!
  15. Jbarnett, thank you for your info, and I think you are right, and I feel like that "second round" might be for those who are wait-listed. Congratulations to you!
  16. For those who have applied to Irvine but haven't heard anything yet - I have emailed the department to ask about my status and got a reply saying they only sent out the "first round" acceptances, and still working on the rest of the applications, but they "have no time table yet for second around admissions." So don't give up hopes. And it will be awesome if those who are admitted could share some inside infos.
  17. Thanks for the info. They said something like "not all students are automatically funded" so I feel like it is sketchy.
  18. Anyone know anything about Anthro at U of Florida?
  19. I finished the entire app for columbia in half an hour, seriously. My partner and I apply together, so we are aiming at cities that have multiple schools. Originally we did not think we wanted to live in New York, (I lived there for 2 years and liked it, but he doesn't seem to like it very much), but his advisor suggested he should try columbia and NYU, so I need to have some school to go to in NYC. Glad Columbia is quite a fit for me. However, I submitted the application one day after the deadline....
  20. Nice! It's so good to feel relaxed, but I am not there yet, ugh. I mentioned Stephen Sohn (English), Matthew Sommer (history) and Matthew Kohrman (Anthro) in my personal statement. I feel reluctant to mention names because I don't know exactly how they feel about MTL, whether they would take new advicees, or anything that might play negatively on my application.
  21. Hey there. I just finished my personal statement for MTL. I know, so late! How is your application going and who are you planning to work with there?
  22. I am applying for only one WGS program, which is the one at Emory. I will be applying for a few interdisciplinary though. Anyone has more info regarding MTL at Stanford, or WGS at Emory? Hey I am willing to exchange my PS with you.
  23. Not sure if this is the right place for the post, but since we are all potential anthropologists, I figure we are sort of experiencing the same thing: I am getting more uncertain about my application now. I have written the personal statements for so many times, and I had professional editors to proofread it since I am not a native speaker, but I constantly feel that those essays I have are not good enough. I hope I could just submit the application and go ahead to do something else, but I can't help thinking that maybe I could get the writings a little bit better before the deadlines. Ah, this is just torturing!
  24. The major problem of this essay is that it is not fully developed as ETS would like to see. For example, in second paragraph, where you insert the possibilities that "poor designs of the streets in the island, or the lack for a law enforcement traffic" that might in fact cause the increase in number of accidents involving mopeds, you did not elaborate in what way, for instance, "poor designs" cause such increase in accidents. It might seem self-explanatory that, of course poor designs surely lead to chaotic traffic situation and thus an increase in accidents, but remember ETS is not looking for a good "answer" to attack the author's position, but your ability to sustain a position by elaborating your point in details. I also notice that you wrote quite a bit of statements that are not closely related to the particular argument prompt per se. For example, sentences like "Despite the fact that this might have a percentage of correctness, the author did not provide any details of the other island", and also the entire concluding paragraph are sentences containing not much relevant information to the prompt. There are some more important logic problems from the author that you might want to include in your essay. For example, what's the purpose of the author saying the town should limit its daily rental from 50 to 25? And will this be effective in controlling the number of mopeds in the streets? Sorry for being *harsh* and hope this helps.
