TripWillis Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Touché TripWillis! [Can I just take this chance to say you're awesome, we all know it.] Thanks. That means a lot coming from a future Columbia PhD. bdon19 1
girlmostlikely Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) I also just got the news of acceptance. Congratulations to the Arrivant, Mr Grimwig, and Girlmostlikely! (and since I read girlmostlikely's SOP, I must say I am not surprised you made it in!) LOVE THIS!--My sentiments exactly, about Columbia as the "dream." I visited there years ago, and pretty much everything I've done--from my undergrad courses, to figuring out "fit" and current scholarship in my field, and carrying out my applications since then has been accompanied by the "please Columbia" feeling in the back of my mind. When I got the first e-mail, it was actually surreal. I am, in a rare moment, speechless! For the record, my area is 20th century. I am seriously in complete shock. Oh, hurrah!!! I haven't seen you around on wgi (granted, no one is really around on wgi) and even on these boards, and were wondering how you've been doing this admissions season. Looks like stalking wgi for years really paid off for us, eh? To reiterate, I've been the exact same way with Columbia for years. Last November, I had the privilege to meet and have an eye-opening conversation with a Columbia prof whose work I've deeply admired for years. It did little to undo the Columbia mystique! Will everyone be attending the open house? I definitely will. Congrats to all who have gotten in, and pay attention to those stats to those who didn't. Columbia is such a crapshoot for ALL of us because they get such a ridiculously large volume of applications. I very well could have been in your shoes, and I would be so very . PS my field is the long 19th century. Edited February 21, 2012 by girlmostlikely
girlmostlikely Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Also, arrivant, no need to apologize for crude language. The response from one of my recommenders was "hot damn."
Earl Grey Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 hey everyone! congrats on acceptances! i got one too! still in shock, and overusing the exclamation point! which constrasts to my initial reaction to the email--too shocked to share the news like a normal person with my significant other--i whispered it, for some reason...like it would all be some crazy mistake if i said it out loud! rainy_day 1

girlmostlikely Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) Fellow acceptees: is the Nicholson fellowship what they call their stipend? The $23,750 year/$3000 summer funding thing in the PDF from GSAS. In any case, upward $26,750 a year is much more than I had been expecting from Columbia and am thrilled! TripWillis Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 How does American money work, like will I have to live in New Jersey and commute cause NYC is so expensive? I've never even been to the country. $27,000/yr won't get you a penthouse in NYC, but you will be more than fine. Live in Brooklyn -- it's a wonderful borough. CUNY gave me $18,000 (although, with summer employment, I really should think of it as more like 22).
rainy_day Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Trip, congrats on that $$ from CUNY. I hear they aren't always too generous with the funding, so I'm happy to hear that! Of course, I would like you to go to UMass, where we could be colleagues together, and I also want you to go anywhere else.

After I found out, I looked up the NRC statistics on the percentage of students that CUNY English funds, and it's 38.2%. So you are definitely right. I'm definitely going to go up to check out UMass, although CUNY is currently my top choice. Would be super cool to be classmates. Amherst is such a literary town. And I am very Western Mass. I have the Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and Sonic Youth albums to prove it. rainy_day 1
DorindaAfterThyrsis Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Congratulations, Columbia-ites! I'm very, very happy for you, and very, very jealous. (I do mean both parts of that honestly...it's quite amazing the split personalities I've developed for celebrating the happiness of others, while bemoaning my own failure. ) I wanted Columbia quite badly. Wish they would send rejections at the same time as acceptances...I'm ill from all the implicit rejects I'm getting this week.

I know I have great offers on the table, but, alas, an implicit 'no' from a dream school is nonetheless heart-wrenching. Out of curiosity, any of you admits African American lit people?
Stately Plump Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Wish they would send rejections at the same time as acceptances...I'm ill from all the implicit rejects I'm getting this week. The worst part about implicit rejections is that tiny thread of hope you hang on to, despite all better judgement. Knowing I will be rejected in the coming weeks, I cling to an imaginary belief that, perhaps, my email has yet to be sent; that they will call me, instead of email; that I am on a waiting list and that I will get in off the list. Why can I not let go? Why?
NowMoreSerious Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Congrats, everyone! (EDIT: realized that a third person had been accepted to Columbia) Members of these forums have provided me with tremendously helpful advice and have been tremendously successful themselves, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to emulate them when I apply next fall. I feel the same way, Espressos. I'll also be applying this fall and I'm already nervous.
RoundandRoundAgain Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Can someone who was rejected let us know what website you're checking for status? I know my ApplyYourself account still hasn't changed and I don't see a decision log-in. DorindaAfterThyrsis 1

rainy_day Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Also, I really wish they wouldn't taunt me with "Congratulations, Rainy_day! Your application has been successfully submitted." Didn't your mother teach you any manners? Don't say congratulations unless you mean it, Columbia!
girlmostlikely Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 My application status worksheet currently has NOTHING listed except for my name, my DOB, and the program to which I applied. It's been this way since December 12. Yeah, I stopped trusting the ApplyYourself pages after a handful of phone calls to GSAS inquiring about the blankness of my application. They are seriously the nicest people over there in my experience, though.
rainy_day Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Here's my theory: with 700+ students to reject, they must be updating people/the website in batches. After a flurry of excitement over the potential for wait listing, I will now return to assuming rejection.
the international Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 This, and also: would someone who has been either rejected or accepted state what it said on their "application status worksheet" next to GRE scores? Mine has a letter listed on there and I am just curious what it means. My application still has no status listed on it and is marked "with department" (or something similar..I've been checking so many applications obsessively I've forgotten the exact wording on each). Do you have the letter "T"? I think it's just like a check mark, no more.
Pynchonette Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Do you have the letter "T"? I think it's just like a check mark, no more. I also had the T. Probably a check mark... OR we can pretend it stands for TERRIFIC!
