Stately Plump Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Are there still a lot of people who have no update on their status? I just want this rejection to roll in so I can be done with it.
bigrelief Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I still haven't had an update. It looks from the results board that those who do also received an email, one of those generic "a decision has been made" type things from the graduate school rather than the department. I'm also trying not to read too much into it, but it's hard--Columbia was a tough loss for me.

It looks from the results board that those who do also received an email, one of those generic "a decision has been made" type things from the graduate school rather than the department. I'm also trying not to read too much into it, but it's basically impossible. I have been checking my online application incessantly, wondering if, perhaps, I'm wait-listed, and have even been considering the possibility of accepting an unfunded MA, if that is indeed the position I'm in. The suspense is overwhelming, and I have been unable to do much of anything else. I haven't showered in days and my family questions my sanity. I have a preliminary meeting to assess progress on my thesis this Tuesday but I am about 12 pages behind where I should be, and yet, I cannot bring myself to leave my computer. Columbia, why, why must you tease me so! Yeah, I can relate.
Stately Plump Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) I still haven't been rejected... WHY?! Dear Columbia: It has been brought to our attention that you have notified some applicants to your program of their rejection while simultaneously leaving others without any update of their standing. . Not only is this behavior offensive, it is also unacceptable. Your actions produce a false sense of hope, and in some rare cases, may cause stomach pains, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, heart-burn, anxiety, cervical cancer, athlete's foot, hair loss, and involuntary spasms of the back, neck, leg, and eyelid. Your actions are unacceptable, and my colleagues and I have no option but to find you guilty of attempted manslaughter in the second degree. Your punishment may be mitigated under the following circumstances: you accept me/us into your program, your offer your reply promptly, and/or you agree to hire me/us as tenure-track professors in 5-6 years. Thank you for your time. We expect your duly response immediately. Further procrastination may be deteriorative to your already precarious position. Sincerely, gradcafe users and Columbia applicants, under the auspices of one Stately Plump Edited February 24, 2012 by Stately Plump rainy_day, woolferine, Grunty DaGnome and 2 others 5
rainy_day Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Haha, StatelyPlump, I love it!! I couldn't agree more. Also, is your handle a Ulysses reference? I've read the first chapter about 6 times, and then I always get distracted. This summer my goal is to finish the three novels I'm most frequently saying I'd like to read: Ulysses, The Invisible Man, and Middlesex.
Stately Plump Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Ulysses, indeed. Page 1. You should see it
rainy_day Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 That's what I thought! The bonus to reading Chapter 1 many times is that I know it fairly well.
vordhosbntwin Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) i'm starting to wonder whether columbia may notify a few more acceptances, given that the rejections seem to have stopped. or perhaps they could be making a wait list. idk, even if they did have 700+ applicants, it's not very difficult to send out 650 rejections within a 24 hr period. or, as i just realized, my application may have been passed on to the MA program. Grunty DaGnome Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) Well, I have no rejection yet, and I'm the first to admit the sample I sent to Columbia was in fact terrible. It was horribly rushed and just a mess over all, so I have no hope for this place. Basically, I wanted to demonstrate my admiration for their school by donating 125 dollars. ...and I already have an MA, so I know that's not the hold up. Edited February 24, 2012 by Grunty DaGnome

I already have an MA, so that can't be the only reason responses seem to be taking so long. I would like to hope that they are mulling over more acceptances or waitlists, but based on this board there are lot of people still waiting to hear. I'm just afraid to get my hopes up.
Grunty DaGnome Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Also, I really wish they wouldn't taunt me with "Congratulations, Rainy_day! Your application has been successfully submitted." Didn't your mother teach you any manners? Don't say congratulations unless you mean it, Columbia! Oh, seriously! I had the exact same thought. For the posters asking where the updates are, click on the "message" field to the left of your screen. Mine still shows no update, but that's where I expect to find my rejection some day.
vordhosbntwin Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 hmmm well, i don't think i'd attend columbia anyway, but acceptances are always nice...

I think it will actually show up as a link on the main page (under your list of recommenders) that says "decision available" or something like that. That's what it looked like for Northwestern, and they also use Apply Yourself.

downtherabbithole Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Please don't shoot the messenger on this one, but I was in touch with the department earlier and she informed me that, 'although official responses can only come from the dean's office, [she could] tell me that all admitted students were already contacted.' Thought that that would be useful to share with those who still haven't heard.

That still doesn't explain why they would reject some people and not others. It also doesn't mean that some people aren't wait-listed or being transferred to the MA program. The whole process is so frustrating (combination of + ).
vordhosbntwin Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 i dunno, we didn't get in; just try to move on.
rainy_day Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 i dunno, we didn't get in; just try to move on. Well I think that's just it; a lot of us would like to move on, but it's hard not to hold onto a glimmer of hope until you get that rejection letter in your hand. Which is why I for one would like the rejection to come along speedily.
Shivrk Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I spoke to the graduate director yesterday evening. They had a problem with my email add. on file, and it looks like i was they were going to send me a note saying that I was a "finalist" but was not ultimately accepted to the program. They have apparently already told the 16 of the 700 that applied their final decision. She mentioned nothing of a waitlist either. I hope this helps, if anything, to keep pushing on with all your other prospective schools. Good luck!
Stately Plump Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) I have definitely counted them out, as evidenced by my placement of them in my "rejected" schools in my signature. However, it would be nice to have some closure. It's definitely really hard to move on having heard nothing, especially because the thought in my head is, "Why haven't I heard anything?" I know that everyone who's in has heard, and I'm not counting on getting an email telling me I've been accepted. However, it would be nice to get an email telling me I'm rejected. And *someone* is making the wait list, and that someone obviously hasn't been rejected yet. I'm pulling for the people on this message board.

veniente Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Who's going to the campus visiting day? And, do you know if there are any travel funds which may be accessed? (Feel free to PM me)
