figuredso Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Is anyone else applying to Florida State English, and is anyone else getting rather anxious (seeing as how their first notifications over the past couple years went out before today's date)? Thought I'd go ahead and open up a thread on this, and if anyone has any "inside scoops" they are very much solicited and welcomed (obviously). Good luck to all those who applied!
crystalleem Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I applied, but I haven't heard anything. I'm anxious, in general, not just about FSU. If you hear anything, please share.
Jbarks Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I, too, applied to FSU, and I'm anxiously waiting. Out of curiosity, what does it say under your admission status? My has a little spiel about sending proper documents to the department, etc.
ComeBackZinc Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 What's the cost of living like down there? I mean, I only make about $13K for a half time assistantship, but then our giant two bedroom is only $750 a month. Context is key.
crystalleem Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I'm not sure what you are seeing. I don't see anything called admission status. Maybe that's a bad sign for me.
Jbarks Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 If you go to the Check your Status page, it's there. All you need is your login information that you used for the application.
crystalleem Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 I went to check my status, but it just shows the standard things: what letters they have received, what term and area I applied for, my address, etc. I don't see anything about an admission status once I log in.
poeteer Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 (edited) What's the cost of living like down there? I mean, I only make about $13K for a half time assistantship, but then our giant two bedroom is only $750 a month. Context is key. Do you teach 2/2? or 2/1 or 1/1/? I think it's pretty cheap to live there. During my MFA, I made about $14K for 1/1 in a place with a similar cost of living as yours, and it was actually still hard for me to afford life...but I also had a generous amount of time to work on my coursework, because I only had 25 students. I was so grateful for that time. 2/2 seems like a lot of work to me, on top of all that coursework/exam prep, especially for 2K less a year. Of course, full funding is full funding and we should all hope to be so lucky! (By which I mean: please, FSU creative writing dept, accept me.) Edited February 21, 2012 by poeteer
ComeBackZinc Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 1/1, although here Intro to Comp is a 5-day a week teaching requirement.
Jbarks Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Yeah, the teaching load is not the best, but the faculty, especially in my field, are great. If I get accepted (and that's a big IF), and I didn't have a better offer (which is likely) then I would be super stoked to go. I'd have a lot of teaching experience in the end...
cquin Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 C'monnnn, FSU! We're going to get notifications tomorrow, I can feel it! Also, my horoscope reads, "You are ready for challenging, intellectual activities." Hell yeah, I am.
Jbarks Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 For serious! I checked my online application like a billion times yesterday (yay hyperbole!) hoping for a status change. Of course, I alternated with email. I really need some positive news; I'm in a very dark place currently.
cquin Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Yeah, I'm going a little ~cray cray~ waiting for FSU. The results board shows that notifications were already sent out by this time last year (and the year before that!). What's going on?
Jbarks Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I'm thinking they may have received a lot of applications, and things are backed up. The one or two times I emailed the admin asst she always seemed a little frazzled. Who knows? I just don't want another rejection.
figuredso Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 I know the English department is conducting a job search for a tenure=track position, and this may be consuming a lot of time that would otherwise be devoted to the graduate admissions process.

The one or two times I emailed the admin asst she always seemed a little frazzled. Who knows? I just don't want another rejection. Three of my schools switched to all-online applications just this year. They all had some quirks and issues to remedy. FSU was one -- they emailed post-deadline and asked us to specify our creative writing genre because the online form hadn't allowed us to do so. I'm thinking these schools might all notify a little later than in years past, but who knows.
cquin Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I SEE AN ACCEPTANCE POSTED! Congrats to whoever you are. It's 9:15 in the morning...I just got to work...and I already know today will be spent frazzled and stressed, shirking my duties in order to obsessively check gmail and gradcafe. Happy Friday!
Jbarks Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 It looks like it was for Rhetoric and Comp, so they're probably notifying by discipline. Before this process, i never speculated so much on anything. CONGRATS to the admit!
figuredso Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 So there's a Rhet/Comp and a creative writing acceptance on the board. Congrats to those who received such good news! Anyone applying to Literature heard anything yet?
Jbarks Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Nope, nothing here. I checked my online status and it's the same.
Jbarks Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I just got accepted to FSU!! I received an email from Janet Atwater inviting me to the open house on March 20th. The official letter with funding offer is to follow. I can't believe this! Good luck to everyone out there!
