Crippling Anxiety Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 (edited) I have been thinking about brushing up my microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and mathematics knowledge by taking free(or cheap) online classes or reading coursebooks in prepration of MPP/MPA. I don't need to get official credits to gain admissions. Since I completed my bachelors a couple of years ago I feel like I have forgotten everything I studied in college. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any comments on this http://ocw.mit.edu/c...-2011/index.htm Is anyone aware of similar free video courses for macroeconomics, statistics and/or mathematics? or maybe some good free books? Megan Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Somebody suggested Khan Academy to me. I haven't used it personally, but their math resources are EXTENSIVE and look impressive. My dad recommends it to students who are struggling in his (social science stats) classes.
Megan Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Somebody suggested Khan Academy to me. I haven't used it personally, but their math resources are EXTENSIVE and look impressive. My dad recommends it to students who are struggling in his (social science stats) classes. www.khanacademy.org. Apparently they are 10 minute video lectures on a variety of topics (there are literally thousands). When I looked at it, they seemed to be organized into a very logical and progressive sequence. Some of them have associated exercises.
MPAprospect12 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 try mbamath.com it's about $150, but it's very extensive.
avocado9 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 MIT Open Courseware: http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm Haven't tried yet, but Utah State University has audio lectures/homework assignments for introductory economics courses (as well as other subjects): http://ocw.usu.edu/economics/index.html If you google "open courseware (subject)" there are a lot of results ... amazing that so much information is available for free on the web!
state_school'12 Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I went through some of MIT's videos for linear algebra. They helped me a lot.
fenderpete Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I liked www.mathdvdtutor.com You can subscribe for a pretty low price per month and access it all. I used it a fair bit for GRE review.
Crippling Anxiety Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 (edited) I am trying to find an online economics course that is comparable to this online course offered by SAIS http://www.sais-jhu....omics/index.htm Here is the link to the syllabus http://www.sais-jhu....PE_Syllabus.pdf This course is too expensive for me ($1500). Any suggestions on comparable courses that are cheaper? Looks like SAIS (John Hopkins) has pre-term courses and also provides pre-calculus DVDs to all admitted students. I wish I could get hold of them somehow. Edited February 24, 2012 by Crippling Anxiety
charlotte_asia Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Have you looked at The Graduate School (formerly known as USDA Grad School)'s offerings? It doesn't appear to offer Econ via distance education, but they do offer math and stats. I just glanced at the price of one class and it was $215. More info here: http://www.graduateschool.edu/search.php?action=search&searchtype=course&as_ccode=MATH%2CSTAT&as_ttlist=DE Good luck! SaraDC 1
Crippling Anxiety Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 Thanks for all the suggestions. Does anyone else know of any other options?
avocado9 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 There was a good article in the NYT yesterday about free on-line courses available to everyone: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/05/education/moocs-large-courses-open-to-all-topple-campus-walls.html Nothing mentioned specifically about an econ/math course available, but the University of Michigan offers one on Model Thinking that might be interesting for public policy folks: https://www.coursera.org/modelthinking/auth/welcome
