Jbarks Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Thank you, ComeBackZinc for all of your insight. I have made plans to visit at the third week of March, and I super excited. Already the DGS has been very helpful in assisting with my visit. I've never been to Indiana before, so I'm not sure what to expect. Also, I know the transition from NYC to Lafayette will not be an easy one. However, there is a part of me that is ready to live a small town life for awhile. I'm really interested in meeting with students and professors, so I can get a better idea of what the community is like. Already I've been told that the medievalists (of which I would be one) are a congenial and tight group. I'm really hoping this program works out because it would be a great fit, so we'll see what happens.
ribeth Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 New rejection posted for Masters, any other MA applicants still in review? I'm still in review--but I applied under rhet/comp, so that may not mean anything (if the post was for Lit). Definitely hoping that I'm wait listed somewhere. Purdue is such an awesome program, and it has a great reputation for rhet/comp. It doesn't help my nerves at all that my dad is seriously convinced I'll be attending in the fall. My parents met each other while they were both attending Purdue, so they love the school. No pressure, right?

No pressure, right? Yikes. My mom was convinced I'd get into any program I applied to, not wanting to understand the intimidating odds and the drawbacks of my application. Which is why I tell everyone I'll be lucky to get in anywhere and expect the worst. I've heard some negative things about the Lafayette area and the inflated size of the English grad department (not sure it applied to Rhet/Comp), but that's just one opinion and I've never been there myself. They have a number of programs that align with my interests, though, and would definitely love to get in. Everything ComeBackZinc says seems to be in response to many of the drawbacks I heard, so obviously it's a matter of individual difference.

It's very compartmentalized, in some ways, but I can see how it would be easy to feel lost. Lafayette, well-- it has to grow on you. Part of my affection for it lies in the fact that I know how much worse campus towns can be, but if you're coming from a big city, it'll be a tough transition, I'm sure.
lolopixie Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 It seems that Purdue sends out acceptances on a rolling basis and keeps that rolling for a long time. Someone posted up on April 20th last year that they received a call in regards to acceptance to the program. I do not think it means you have not been accepted. I'm waiting with you. Postcolonial. I haven't gotten a decision yet.
Rupert Pupkin Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I'm starting to think all of the acceptances might be out. The latest decision posted on the results board claims that the "Acceptance letter says the admissions rate was about 9% for the department." How could they calculate this figure if there were acceptances still to be made? And at the risk of offending the person who made that post, how could Purdue's MA program be the first choice of someone in the 99th percentile on the GRE with a 4.0 undergrad GPA? I am still "under review" as an MA applicant, BTW. Jbarks 1
fordrml Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I received my acceptance email for MA in Literary Studies yesterday evening, so it could be that Purdue is sending out another wave of acceptance letters. I was also offered a fully-funded TAship during my two years of MA, and (as long as I remain in good standing) a guaranteed TAship for the next five years while I work on my PhD. Thank you ComeBackZinc for the info about the Lafayette area. It will be very helpful in making a decision!
WendyMoira Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 New rejection posted for Masters, any other MA applicants still in review? I'm still "Under Review." I applied for an MA in lit. My SO, too, is still waiting
ComeBackZinc Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 So I did a little poking around, and it seems that my prior impressions were right. First, although the DGS approves all the candidates, students are chosen by the faculty of the different specializations. And they are largely on their own timetables. So you can't assume that you're out just because some students were already admitted and you haven't heard. Also, the admissions are in a sense rolling, just because of the size of the program and the number of applications. They're still choosing; they still have both acceptances and rejections to send. Until they've come out and told you, you can't assume anything. Which I acknowledge can be kind of frustrating. But don't give up hope. It's still fairly early in this process.
lolopixie Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 My friend received a rejection email to the PhD program for Purdue today. I have not received an email and my application is still "under review". Good news for me. I'm at least still in the running. I agree with the above that Purdue really does accept on a rolling basis. They aren't like some of the schools that send everything out in one day.
Venti White Choc. Mocha Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I'm the friend! I got a rejection. Hold out hope people if you haven't gotten one yet. It was pretty nice as far as most rejections go.
ComeBackZinc Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Heard around the office-- we got about 600 applications this year, department-wide.
lolopixie Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Heard around the office-- we got about 600 applications this year, department-wide. Yes, I was given this information when I emailed a question about my SOP, that the department typically gets 600 applicants. wreckofthehope and JeremiahParadise 1 1
chainofbeing Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Hi people, I have an admission to the program in Philosophy and literature, without funding details though. As far as I can see, there has been a question about the program on the forums, but no answers yet. ComeBackZinc, thanks for all the helpful tips you have already shared, these kinds of details are hard to come by anywhere else. if you or anybody else could share any opinions about this program that would be a great favor.
ComeBackZinc Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 I'm afraid I don't know anything about funding details, but I do know a couple people in the Philosophy and Literature program who love it, because of the flexibility they have in choosing classes and directing their own project.
lolopixie Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I have 2 implicit rejections pending, which makes Purdue my only hope left. I'm not sure where they are at on the notification list, but my application is still "under review." I haven't seen any more notifications go up. Anyone contacted the department yet? Am I on an implicit waitlist at this point in time? This is so scary because it really looks like Purdue is my last hope
Jbarks Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 I'm keep my fingers crossed for you, Lolo. I'm going to visit next week, so, if you're still in limbo, and I hear something about the process while I'm there, I'll let you know. I still wouldn't give up on Mississippi either; I don't know if they've sent out their wait lists yet, so you could get something there.

I can't say whether you'll get in or not, but the fact that you haven't been rejected yet means you have gotten through several rounds of rejections. I'm keep my fingers crossed for you, Lolo. Take it from me: don't judge the school by its deserted campus. It's Spring Break this week, so if you're coming now, it might seem a bit empty and bleak. But when you see the campus full of 40K students, it's a whole nother ballgame.

ComeBackZinc Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Ahhh well I hope you have a great visit. If you feel like dropping me a PM, feel free, although I also understand if that's a bit awkward or whatever.

I figured I made it through a few rounds of rejections and I'm in some sort of consideration, and know that Purdue does a rolling thing and doesn't reject out everyone til it is all over or notify of an "official" waitlist...please let someone decline an offer and let me get one!!!!
kikalique87 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 As it turns out, I'll be sadly declining my offer tomorrow. Hope it will help you out!
lolopixie Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 As it turns out, I'll be sadly declining my offer tomorrow. Hope it will help you out! If I get a call/email from them tomorrow, I will know it was a gift from you!!! Good luck at Ohio State - better get your crimson ready.
jelkost Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I'm still waiting to hear back about my rhet/comp MA application. I'm getting pretty antsy!
lolopixie Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 I sent an email inquiring on my application status and was told that I was still in review and that the department sends offers through April. At least I didn't email and get a rejection back!! After the day I had at work today, I am praying so hard that I get into this program...or LSU! Two Espressos 1
