Anyone hear about/call the English MA program for Guelph or U of T?

I called and McGill they told me that there's a meeting on the 5th to discuss applications and then mid this week they should let people know.

Guelph just said they were still reviewing applications and that was all they could tell me.

Toronto said first two weeks of March...

Have you heard different on any of these schools?

I was told that the committee will make final decisions on the MA applicants by the end of this week. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that we should expect to hear the news on Friday. Any idea whether we should expect news via post, email, or phone?

For which school? I heard back from U of T yesterday, accepted! Can't believe it. They sent an e-mail and said that no hard copy would follow. I saw McGill up on the board today but I haven't heard back from them so I'm nervous.

I and a few others I know got acceptances to the McGill MA on Wednesday. We were all internal applicants... not sure if that makes a difference in terms of timing. Best of luck to those still waiting!

Thanks on McGill! I saw a few acceptances on the board to McGill. I figured I was out but maybe not if there is much of a difference in timing. I'm fine if I don't get in, I'm very happy with U of T. They're both amazing programs.

Congrats Aubergine and Jelkost!

Crummy about no funding. I know they didn't offer it at the Masters level but I thought for sure PhD's got funding.

Has anyone applied to/ heard from Ryerson's Literatures of Modernity MA program? It closed on January 15th and I haven't heard a peep. Would really love to be accepted to this one!!!

That was the McGill co-ordinator I spoke to with regards to the committee's final decision--made on Feb 9th. I think we can expect news from McGill this week.

Oh really?! Ok, thanks so much for letting me know, I thought I was totally down and out. Fingers crossed for the both of us!

Thanks for the good wishes njm.black. I'm afraid that I too was refused admission to McGill. Are you leaning towards Toronto over Guelph?

Sorry to hear that about McGill!

For Guelph/U of T, it depends on funding vs reputation. I know there's no funding at U of T and that Guelph is usually pretty generous but I'm also concerned career wise about reputation. I know Guelph is an amazing school, especially for what I want to do, but Toronto may look better on an application. However, If Guelph's funding is generous enough I may be tempted to go there instead.

What are your plans?!

Guelph is an excellent school and you'd certainly get some financial support there. I think you also need to consider your research interests. Does Guelph have a faculty member with research interests that complement your own? Does Toronto? After meddling through your funding question, I think the question of research area is more important than the consideration of perceived reputation.

As for myself, I'm wait-listed for U of T, but I've been told the odds are very good. So, I'm still holding out--holding my breath, rather! ha!

When do you expect to hear from Guelph?

Well, I have Daniel Fischlin at Guelph and Elizabeth Harvey at U of T.

Since both schools fit, I'm back to funding vs reputation, and that's if I even get in to Guelph. I even have a place to live in both cities worked out.

In terms of hearing, Guelph is being evasive. I called last wednesday and they said decisions have been made (wouldn't tell me where I stood of course) and that letters would be going out soon. I called yesterday and they said the exact same thing.

Congrats on making the wait list! I've heard the mobility on that list is very good. I have a friend on the list too, she'd go to U of T for sure if she got in, so my fingers are firmly crossed for her, and you!

Ah, of course; it looks like you've got the research aspect under control. It will be a tough decision indeed! Guelph's evasiveness must be terribly frustrating for you. What could they be thinking?

May I ask, did your friend inquire as to here position on the wait-list? If not, you should suggest she do so--it may allay her anxiety! This whole process is terribly nerve-wracking, isn't it?

We shall have to send tributes of "good vibes" to the admission gods for the three of us!

I have no idea what's up with Guelph. I've scheduled a trip there anyways and am meeting Prof. Fischlin when I go. I won't have time if I just find out on the 30th or something ridiculous like that.

About the wait-list, I don't think she did! I will definitely suggest it to her. Thanks for the tip, I'm sure it will help immensely if she hasn't already asked.

And yes, horribly nerve-wraking. And distracting! I can hardly get anything done besides check my e-mail.

I really hope you're bumped into the program soon. Are you going/able to go to visitor's day on the 23rd?
