  1. I have a Thinkpad from 2003 that is still in great condition; however, it can only run on a cord now. The battery is the one shortcoming. In college, many of my friends had serious issues with their Dells, Acers, and Macs. Of course, these problems interfered with projects and assignments. I never had a single issue despite the advanced age of my faithful Thinkpad. I still use it as my "backup" laptop. That said, I'd recommend a Thinkpad if you're looking for something that is extremely reliable, tough, and well designed. Don't be fooled by its vulcan-like appearance--the shell is composed, in part, of carbon fibre.

Congrats Obrera! Woohoo for direct applicants!

JackTripper, I freaked out a bit when I saw the letter. It's in a standard letter-size envelope; typical Gov't of Canada brown envelope. It's thin, just two pages inside mine.

Thanks Bentharbour--congrats to you too! It would be interesting to see how many direct applicants there were this year; I'm sure, however, that there can't be too many direct applicants. My fingers are crossed for all those still waiting.

I just got news up here north of Toronto. So relieved--I was successful! I'm an independent applicant. Good luck to those still waiting; hang in there.

Yes, indeed; it does look as though it will be this Friday or the next. I applaud your sleuthing!

Bentharbour, thanks for clarifying. I didn't even bother to check the actual source for context.

"Results coming via Canada Post. Good luck!" If the above does not mean that they are going out this week, then what's the point of posting that paltry line on Twitter? We all know--bitterly, I might add--that the results are eventually coming via Canada Post.

    Cathaea--thank you--that's comforting news.

    Master's SSHRC 2012

I've been supplementing my SSHRC thumb-twirling with frequent visits to the doctoral SSHRC page. Folks there are speculating that news may not come out until May.
  13. Sparrowing, U of T's "Off-Campus Listings" is helpful: http://www.housing.utoronto.ca/rentalHousing.htm
  14. An English "meet & greet" before classes and orientation sounds like a wonderful idea! Any one else interested? I don't know yet when I'll be in Toronto; I'm still wading through the lodging hunt--sigh.
  15. Hey there, I don't know much about Cullowhee, but I can tell you that Asheville is absolutely wonderful. Great music, amazing restaurants, neat art scene, eclectic mix of middle-aged tourists, hippies, vegetarians, kill-your-own-dinner people, outdoorsy folk, you name it; a generally very progressive city. I spent four years in the area. Feel free to send me a PM.

Sugarcoatedsour, It's good to hear that many successful applicants "decide to go to law school, an American university, decide to wait a year, etc." Can you shed any light on the situation with direct-to-SSHRC applicants?

Oh Obrera, sorry to hear that. All hope is not lost; fingers are crossed!

Welcome to the SSHRC master's gang, Aion! Every time this topic is bumped, my heart skips a beat and I immediately assume someone has heard news from SSHRC. Good things come to those who wait.

Obrera, I admire your initiative! "The competition is still in progress" brings to mind athletes in a Greek stadium; however, I suppose a vision of professors with sweaty brows locked in board rooms is more fitting. It's funny they wouldn't answer all your questions in one email. I'm so eager to hear the answer as to how many direct applicants there are!!

As an independent applicant, I have also had those questions running wild in my head like headless chickens. Like you, I have devoured the statistics from previous years; it is interesting that 50 awards for independent applicants is not a standard number year-by-year.
  21. Congratulations! You are a paragon of hope for the rest of us! UNC-Chapel Hill's Eng. Dept. is top notch and North Carolina is such a great place. In no time, you'll be y'all-ing folks--in an endearing, all-inclusive way.
  22. "Well, she seemed like a good candidate, but then she camped out on our lawn and now we're reconsidering..." F. Thunderpaws, what a great idea!--I hadn't yet considered that option! ha ha!
