fe3lg0odhit Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Pretty sure I'm going to accept my offer for Chem Ph.D. at UCLA! Anyone else going?
EquationForLife Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Lol nice three thread post...I'm not sure which one to respond to. I'm visiting the Chem program on their visitation day, March 24th I think, will decide soon after that.
newbruinphd Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 I just accepted my offer for my Ph.D. in Molecular and Medical Pharmacology...excited!
fe3lg0odhit Posted March 8, 2012 Author Posted March 8, 2012 newbruindphd, How did you accept the offer? I haven't received instructions on how to do so yet.
newbruinphd Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 (edited) fe3lg0od, I was sent an email last week with a letter from the department on whether I accept of decline their offer. They mailed me a hard copy of the same letter and I faxed it in couple days ago. I think it varies by dept. Edited March 9, 2012 by newbruinphd
fe3lg0odhit Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 So after scouring the likes of craigslist, padmapper, etc., I realize that living near UCLA is going to cost a lot of money. I also have some skepticism about using these websites to find roommates to share an apartment with. Because of this, I've decided to just post on here about it. So... I want to move in to an apartment around July. I am a 23 y/o guy with a cool cat. I am coming from Baltimore, MD, so I want to find a place so that I'm not stranded when I get out there. Is anyone else looking for a roommate? Maybe we could get a few people together and split a 3-4 person place or even a house. Cheers!
EquationForLife Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 If I end up going to UCLA, I will send you a PM if you are interested. I live in LA right now and have some friends at UCLA so I know the places pretty well. I'm also 23, male and pretty fresh out of college.
newbruinphd Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 hey guys, I have 1 room available in a Brentwood condo (at most 10 minutes away from campus). u'd have ur own bathroom and rent would probably be around $800 for the room. I'm 24 and i'm originally from the LA area (live in the bay area now), so definitely looking for someone chill / outgoing as a roommate! If both of you guys (feelgood and PVnRT) end up at UCLA, it'd be cool to meet some other UCLA grad students over the summer!
nechalo Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 (edited) I'm split mainly between UCLA, Northwestern, UC Davis at this point. Just between us though, UCLA is at the top. But, I haven't visited yet - coming this Thursday for chemistry! Anyone have any recommendations about what to do/check out in the westwood and surrounding areas while I'm visiting? I'm staying for a couple extra days, because it's a top choice of mine, to get a better feel of the place... Edited March 20, 2012 by nechalo
EquationForLife Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Hey, I'm visiting for the Chemistry program as well this Friday, but I already live in LA. Feel free to PM me if you got any questions. Otherwise, I will probably see you there.
Laxy Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Hey! I just accepted my PhD offer in the Electrical Engg. department... Really excited! And yeah, 23 y/o male fresh out of college looking for acco Though I have no clue of how to go about doing that since I have never even visited the country.
angelmon Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I'll be attending the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning program, pretty excited
bodywithoutorgans Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Attending UCLA's Political Science PhD program beginning in the Fall. 24 year old male, pretty laid back. Please PM me if you are also looking for a place to live in LA. Thanks!
nechalo Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 I ended up deciding on UCLA (chemistry). I am looking forward to it; will be either starting this summer or fall.
angelmon Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Does anyone have an idea of how soon you need to start looking for housing? I contacted one agency that told me to check back 3-4 weeks before I want to move out. I like having things planned out in advanced so I'm trying to avoid waiting that that long, + University housing cost are more than I'm willing to swallow, what are you all thinking of doing?

I am also a bit disappointed at the price of university apartments, $1260/month for a studio in Weyburn - yikes. From what I've heard even the immediate surrounding area can easily be a bit cheaper. University apartments are nice options just because they are guaranteed and there is not as much of a worry about the landlord/maintenance/etc. I'm thinking of watching padmapper.com like a hawk about 3-4 weeks before I would move. If I don't see anything particularly great I'll just go with Weyburn and eat the cost - just at first. My plan is to move away from campus after my first year (once done with classes and just doing research and a little teaching) so I keep telling myself that the high cost and other craziness of finding a place in a new town is only temporary. It will be easier to find an apartment and easier to to find something a lot cheaper, especially farther from campus, once we're already there, have friends/word of mouth, and are able to see properties in-person. newbruinphd Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 hey guys, I'm still looking to share a 2 bedroom condo in brentwood with (7 minutes driving to campus). You get your own room and bath. Looking for grad students who are clean, chill, and definitely down to chill / hangout in LA on wknds and such. I'm 24 y/o male and starting in UCLA this fall for my Ph.D. in Molecular and Medical pharmacology. PM me for more details! Rent will be $800 (not including parking and utilities)
polarbear0627 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Political Science PhD student too. Anyone interested in sharing apartment? Unfortunately I am not in the US at this moment. Given that the math camp starts in early September, I plan to arrive in LA at that time.
sj2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Political Science starting in the fall, too. I just submitted an application to live at Weyburn in the fall. I'm also looking to sublet Weyburn for July-August. I'm a 25 year old female, pretty easygoing, don't smoke.
bemonocled Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Pure math PhD starting in the Fall here. I think we got an unusually large class this year - 42 new graduate students when the average is in the low 30's! One graduate student I spoke to recommended living in Weyburn Terrace for the first year, since most of your cohort will be living there and so it will be easier to not become socially isolated. Then consider moving further away second year to somewhere like Palms to save money. So that is my tentative plan.
MRK Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Asian Languages & Cultures program starting this fall. Is there any international student here? I think I'm moving to L.A. in mid August but not really sure about the visa acquiring procedure.
gatcmet Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Bioengineering PhD starting in the Fall! Will be living in Weyburn Terrance (unfortunately for my wallet), so if anyone else is living there, feel free to shoot me a message!
acdelco Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 I thought I would revive the UCLA thread. I'll be attending for a PhD in Community Health Sciences (in the School of Public Health) any other incoming Bruins?
