sat Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I am going to Georgia Tech this Fall for pursuing PhD in Biology...... Sadly I see very less activity in the Gatech community... and I cant really find people who are joining Gatech.... If any of you guys are joining or atleast any current students reply to this.. twill be wonderful..
spark1989 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I plan to join GT (most probably), PhD computer science this fall. Yea, I know that there is a limited activity on this forum about GT.
sat Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 YESSSSS!!!! Finally found someone.... yeah very very few people joining GT kinda interact here....
sm2501 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 hey I also plan to join GT for a PhD in Biomedical Engineering.
finknottle Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Hello. I'm headed to Tech too. This thread is surprisingly inactive.
Russel Aziz Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I will be joining Gatech this fall for PhD in Civil Engineering (Transportation).
rmi Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I will join Gatech for a PhD in electrical engineering.
kaeser Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I will be joining GA Tech for PhD in Computer Science this fall.
pourtant Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I'll be in the Digital Media MS program this fall (which I never saw mentioned this year in these forums...I felt lonely). I just visited campus last weekend, talked to some people in the program and decided it was the place for me. Now I'm trying to find an apartment in Atlanta and figuring out how to move down there from New York.
finknottle Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) Yes, I need to figure out housing too. From what I saw on their housing site, on campus housing is more expensive than rentals outside. And they mandate a one year contract for on campus housing, which you can't break unless you are graduating. So it's a no go. Edited May 2, 2012 by finknottle
pourtant Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 The housing is right off campus, but in what people told me was a less desirable neighborhood (Home Park). I guess it's mostly undergrads and the crime rate is a little higher than some of the other areas near campus. (To be fair, the buildings looked nice from the outside.) Apparently many grad students live in Midtown, which is just east of campus. It's a nice neighborhood, a little pricey, and it's easy to get to campus without using a car. I met a girl on campus who suggested that the west side is a good place to look if you like new-ish apartment complexes with all the amenities. It's basically the area to the immediate west of campus. There are lots of good restaurants out there, but it doesn't seem very walkable. She said there are lots of young professionals out there. I'm actually planning to live a little further out, perhaps in Virginia Highlands or Candler Park. It's not as close to campus, but I liked the character of the neighborhoods better.
finknottle Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I heard similar things too. Homepark would be cheaper, but somewhat unsafe relatively speaking. To the east of the campus is Midtown, which has a few good apartments and to the west is Atlantic station, which also has a sizable student population. Without a car, I guess you would somewhat constrained to these areas in the vicinity of campus.
sat Posted May 6, 2012 Author Posted May 6, 2012 Finally nice to see some activity happening here. At first I thought practically no one had chosen to go to Georgia Tech... Anyway yeah im figuring out about housing too... Moving all the way from west coast and im planning to finalize housing before I fly out for summer break. Did read and heard lot abt the infamous Homepark... there a lotta apartments like 100midtown, AMLI, westmar, etc etc... But still havent finalized yet..
jacket24 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Hello everyone, I went to GaTech for undergrad and it looks like I'll be staying on for grad school as well. It sounds like you've all got a pretty decent grasp on what to expect with the areas around campus. Having a car definitely makes life easier in Atlanta since Marta isn't exactly the most efficient public transit system. Although they charge a pretty penny for parking passes (~$650/yr), you will save a substantial amount of money living a little farther from campus (with the exception of Home Park and the associated security issues). I would suggest that you look into M Street apartments (very close to campus), and other apartments along Howell Mill (just northwest of Tech) as well. Best of luck to you all and hopefully Geogia Tech lives up to your expectations.
CloakandSwagger Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Hey, guys. I'm currently at Georgia Tech and just finished my first semester of my MS in Mechanical Engineering. So far, I like GT a lot. Atlanta is ok. I live in Midtown and just walk to the MARTA station and ride the Tech Trolley to campus and back which makes commuting easier. I'd be glad to answer any other questions if you guys have any. Welcome to Tech
finknottle Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 (edited) Glad you guys posted. I've been collecting names of apartments close to Tech, and this is what I've come up with so far:Windsor over PeachtreeAlexander on PonceAMLI100 Midtown Park District Tivoli Tenside1016 Lofts There were a few more too, but can't remember them right now. On apartment review websites, the opinion seems to be divided for most of these places and there's no clear winner. I think Tenside, Park District, Alexander on Ponce and Windsor over Peachstreet are rated better than the rest. I guess they are a shade more expensive too. Any thoughts? CloakandSwagger Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I've only seen Alexander on Ponce and 100 Midtown. I drive by Alexander on Ponce when I go to the Publix by there and it's a good area from what I saw. 100 Midtown is also in a good area. It's right beside the chinese restaurant I order from a lot, haha.
Jojhod Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Hey guys, I'll do a PhD in aerospace engineering at GA tech next year. I am also struggling to find a place to live. Until now, I was particularly interested in Alexander on Ponce, but I am still not sure. 1/2 people says it's great, the other half says it sucks...mmmh...(and the GA tech housing is extremely expensive!)
yvette-chen Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Hi everyone! I will attend GT for phd in Mechanical Engineering this fall. I am also looking for off campus housing. If anyone is interested in looking for a roommate please let me know! You may send me an email to jane.chen.1016@gmail.com . I am a female student and I prefer living with girls!
sokaygo Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Hey guys, I'll join Tech next fall for PhD in Civil Engineering. I have a couple of questions if anybody can help. How expensive is on-campus housing (GLC) compared to off-campus close neighborhood ? I know GLC is $3,889 per semester but I have no idea on how does an off-campus but close to campus (on a walking distance) furnished apartment cost. Don't you think it could be interesting to go to on-campus housing at least for the first year ? It might be helpful to meet more students and get easily into the Tech Social life experience (I'm an international and I don't know anybody there). Thank you for any thoughts sharing.
prabha101 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Hey! Is anyone looking for Off-Campus Housing near Georgia Tech? I am looking for 2-3 people to sublet my apartment this September. You could also continue staying by signing a new lease after september. Details are posted here! Please let me know if anyone would be interested. I could help students transition and look for housing as well. http://gatech.uloop.com/housing/view.php/7159291?fb=1

The GLC is too expensive for what you get, IMO. If you want to live in a environment with a lot of students, try 100 midtown. It's pretty much student housing as well, but you get people from Ga State, SCAD, etc, as well as tech. There are also a lot of international students. It's a pretty fun place .. parties all the time (if that's what you're looking for ) .. also comes with utilities .. the rooms are pretty small, though .. Solace on peachtree is nice .. comes with utilities included. No WD or DW though, and it isn't furnished. There are a lot of apartments around campus that have plenty of tech students living there. I didn't live on campus my first year, but I'm from GA and have a car so I didn't really need to lol. Also, if you are looking to meet tech students, you should join the facebook group for incoming grads.
closetgeek Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Also ... As tempting as it is, do NOT do home park .. it is way too unsafe and isn't worth it.
lyes Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Hey all, I'm an international student joining GA Tech for the MS in Computational Science and Engineering next month. I was considering campus housing for proximity and safety reasons mainly, but now that I have read about the small rooms and the cheaper off-campus options I am quite confused! Any insights you think might help me out?
