  1. I don't think it is very competitive at all. I've actually been told that not enough students are applying for it. When Rick gave a talk at my school he said over 80% of students had gotten it in the previous year. He said he expected that to increase to close to 100% since they increased the acceptances to around 400. I did hear that one year one country was unable to accept as many students as they were expecting to. I vaguely recall it being Switzerland. But I still would not worry too much.
  2. I started as soon as I was allowed to. I'm not sure you can wait until the next summer to start. I think the last month you can begin is in March or something (I could be wrong).
  3. Did anyone else out there apply for this?
  4. Finally got the official email today! Japan, I hope you're ready for meeee
  5. Just checked my account on fastlane it said 34Gs for the stipend used in 2014!
  6. I emailed the partner organization to ask if they knew when the awards would be sent out. They told me not til mid-May and that I would be receiving one.
  7. Congrats guys! I'm going to Japan ! A letter hasn't gone out yet, but I got unofficial word yesterday . Probably won't be completely satisfied til I get the letter though!
  8. There are a lot of fellowships for minorities. But don't let that limit you. Go for the NSF GRFP and other top fellowships as well. One fellowship is UNCF/Merck, but I think that is mostly for people close to graduating: http://umsi.uncf.org/sif There is also the GEM fellowship: http://www.gemfellowship.org/students/gem-fellowship-program/ I don't know too much about any other fellowships for chemistry since it's not my field, but there are probably lists out there.
  9. My CO said they think the stipend will be applied retroactively. Guess we'll find out soon enough!
  10. Yep! It is pretty frustrating. I have an internship offer that I don't know what to do with because I haven't gotten a final approval from NSF
  11. I applied to Japan. Mine also still says that it's awaiting approval. Good luck!
  12. I received an email yesterday from NSF stating my application would be forwarded to the partner organization
  13. Has anyone heard anything back yet? It sucks that it takes so long. I want to sublease my apartment but not til I know
  14. I have a couple of friends that used to live at tivoli tenside. The place is awesome and it's definitely close enough to campus to bike. I don't know much about alexander on ponce, but I know where it is. I don't really like the area. Tenside feels pretty safe, although it is closer to home park, and I think there was a shooting there a few years ago. If you live on ponce you'll be closer to restaurants and bars and stuff, but tenside is near a few good places. Ormsbys is particularly awesome. But anyways, I may be biased since I've been to tenside often and have never been to alexander on ponce.
  15. Hi everyone, I'm trying to file my taxes (cutting it close, I know!) and I'm confused about how to report my fellowship. I started receiving my fellowship in the fall, and I received a W-2 for being a GRA before this. I reported my W-2, and then filled out the 1098-t form. The only form the school has given me for the fellowship is the 1098-t form. I've done my taxes on turbotax and it says I owe money and H & R block says I'm receiving money, so I'm doing something wrong one one of these! Am I supposed to report the income I received from the fellowship elsewhere? Thanks!
  16. I love Tech! Which I never thought I'd say since it is my undergrad school's rival . There are a lot of good opportunities here. Pretty much every other week there's a company recruiting students in the lobby of the College of Computing building (including Facebook, Microsoft, etc). There are also a lot of professors doing pretty cool research. I actually switched from robotics to computer science, but only because I'm more interested in learning about the intelligent aspect of robots instead of the hardware side.
  17. Also ... As tempting as it is, do NOT do home park .. it is way too unsafe and isn't worth it.
  18. The GLC is too expensive for what you get, IMO. If you want to live in a environment with a lot of students, try 100 midtown. It's pretty much student housing as well, but you get people from Ga State, SCAD, etc, as well as tech. There are also a lot of international students. It's a pretty fun place .. parties all the time (if that's what you're looking for ) .. also comes with utilities .. the rooms are pretty small, though .. Solace on peachtree is nice .. comes with utilities included. No WD or DW though, and it isn't furnished. There are a lot of apartments around campus that have plenty of tech students living there. I didn't live on campus my first year, but I'm from GA and have a car so I didn't really need to lol. Also, if you are looking to meet tech students, you should join the facebook group for incoming grads.
  19. Heh, I haven't posted on Grad Cafe since I started grad school! But I've been following this thread for the past couple of weeks. Actually, I was awake when someone posted that the list of awardees was out. When I checked my name wasn't there, so I didn't think I got anything. But when I woke up I found out I had received an award. Here are my results: IM/BI E/E E/E G/G o_O Awarded The G/G was interesting..didn't say what needed to be improved, but I guess it doesn't matter too much! Congrats to everyone who got an award/HM .. and for those who didn't, don't give up! Use what you've learned to improve your application
  20. nobody seems to know yet . There are a lot of discussions on it in the fb group

    Atlanta, GA

yay! I'll be going to tech too! I definitely think ga tech is in a cool area of atlanta. Midtown is great and there are plenty of things to do! It is full of a lot of really different people, and it's not hard to meet friends at all. Atlanta has sooo many colleges (Tech, Emory, Ga State, Spelman, Morehouse + more!), so there are definitely a lot of young people to meet, and fun things to do! As far as safety goes, I don't actually live in midtown ( or atl, it's just easier to say ), but I know that the safe areas are kind of a hit or miss. I don't think it is TOO bad, though. I plan on living as close to campus as possible, without actually living "on campus." On campus housing is crappy. The rooms are even smaller than the pictures portray, and they are really not worth the money that Tech charges for them. Many people use a company called promove for finding apartments out here. I'll probably use them too since they are free, so why not . You can tell them all of your criteria for where you want to live (safety, proximity to campus, social area, price, etc) and they will try to find what you are looking for. City Data also has a lot of good information about the area: http://www.city-data.com/forum/atlanta/
  22. Wow, thank you everyone for all of your great answers!! My sister just decided (It's been up in the air) that she will be going with me! So I won't be alone anymore!! (BTW, I had to reduce some of your (and my) emoticons lol. Who knew there was a limit!) Thank you, robot_hamster! Hehe, I plan on looking into all the latest French fashions. Or at least wearing dresses the majority of the time I'm there! I don't really mind looking like a tourist, lol. Although it would be fun to pretend. Hi Fuzzylogician! Thanks for all of the info! I don't actually have a research group to practice with, but I will practice a lot with my professor. Luckily, I already have a presentation prepared that I presented in front of a research lab, which my professor says will work fine, though I do not know the presenting time for the conference. This presentation was almost an hour, which I'm sure is too long. Now that I know that my sister will be there, I definitely know I will be exploring the city, hehe. But I will make sure I attend a good amount of the other talks, and stay for my own session! As for intimidation, my professor has pretty much taught me how to answer when I don't know what to say , which is pretty much along the lines of what you've told me. I'll still try to make friends with other students, as I'm sure I will be bumping into them in the future! Hi beanbagchairs . Yes, fuzzy did give a lot of good information! That is a very good quote, though. Maybe I'll print it out and read it over and over on the plane! Hehe, jk. But it will definitely be useful to recall this in case I get nervous. Hi Safferz! Congratulations to you and good luck! I took 4 years of French in high school, but I've forgotten it all! I've been using rosetta stone to help bring me back up to speed, so hopefully once I get there, I can at least remember how to say "I'M LOST!! HELP ME!!!" . Thank you for the links! They will definitely come in handy. For some odd reason, I'm not big on rehearsing! I tend to do much better at presenting if I haven't rehearsed it that much, as long as I know the information. But perhaps it would be better if I rehearse too much, rather than rehearse too little . We shall see. Also, business casual sounds good. Thanks Ogopo! All of you guys have helped bring my confidence up (and I won't be travelling alone), so I think by excitement has almost surpassed my fear! I've definitely heard some good tips for reducing the intimidation! As for mingling, I like meeting new people, so hopefully I will be able to spot some young faces! Actually, that brings up another question. There is time to mingle after each talk? Or do they go back to back? I definitely will have a map with me! (I want to use the GPS on my phone, but I don't think the battery will last .. I don't even know if it would work actually lol ). And it's good to know that everyone speaks English. I understand some French, so hopefully I'll be able to have a slightly coherent conversation without them rolling their eyes! Also, I love cheese and I love wine, so I will be enjoying that for sure!! Do you have any tips of good restaurants to go to? Best places to shop? Or any resources that I can find that tell me all of the touristy things to do? Thanks!
  23. Hi all. Over the summer I participated in an REU. My advisor and I wrote a paper on our work and it was accepted to an IEEE conference -- in Paris!! I'm the first author, and will be presenting the paper. The only thing is, I've never been to a conference (I'm still an undergrad). I'm scared out of my mind about presenting in front of seasoned researchers. Especially since my advisor won't be attending! I'm going to be in Paris for a week by myself. I don't even know if that should be exciting (I'm more scared than happy about this, that's for sure). Anybody have any tips? I'm especially afraid of landing in France and having absolutely no idea where to go/what to do...for a whole week. Am I supposed to attend every day of the conference series? Should I stay and listen to everyone on the day of my presentation? How do I avoid people from scaring the heck out of me when I present? I don't even know what I'm supposed to wear
