Can I add that I clicked on this post expecting (and hoping for) a thread about "real" Hogwarts' culture! LOL ehh.. what's happened to me...

for those accepted into grad programs straight from undergrad
closetgeek replied to adsum's topic in Officially Grads
I definitely have a bad case of senioritis.. like many others, my previous semester was hell.. now, I only need 4 hours to graduate, but I took 2 extra classes in my major because they sounded fun (but they aren't required so its hard to care). This semester isn't even all that hard, I'm just lazy now..I don't even have Monday/Friday classes! That makes my procrastination even worse -- you know how hard it is to concentrate when you have a break coming up..that's how it is for me every week lol. oddly enough, even as I procrastinate, my grades aren't actually suffering..I've always been a good procrastinator . So I guess my advice is: learn to effectively procrastinate and you'll be okay! (I kid! kinda) -
hehe, no prob! yea, I think it would be hard to happily live in atlanta without a car. They do have zipcars there, though. There's also the MARTA transit system, but I've never used it. I would recommend avoiding it, though. And yes, I agree. I think the program is going to be great. I'm pretty excited! BTW, theres a slowly forming facebook group for graduate students entering in the fall: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_168229566553999 There's also one for 2010. In case anyone has questions, they may have already been asked on here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=105290002845646&v=wall

Hi Gilmour! Congrats on getting accepted! Next time you have a question, you should post it! That's what grad cafe is for . But I guess this post counts So about the place in general...I really like the campus. It has a mixture between older buildings and really nice and modern buildings. Tech's located in midtown Atlanta, and the research buildings for robotics and the college of computing are within walking distance to a nice strip of food places, coffee shops, etc. The area seems really hip and cool for students . Theres also a lot of nice areas -- just in midtown. Atlanta in itself has a lot of cool other sites. But midtown has Piedmont park, which is really nice. A lot of festivals and concerts take place there. Its beautiful. There's also plenty of places to shop. Atlantic station has a lot of nice stores, and its cool because you can live right in atlantic station. Theres also a museum (never been to it), the World of Coke, and a nice aquarium (touristy stuff). Of course there are also bars spattered about. So as far as the social aspect goes, this is definitely a good place to be! Also, Tech's located in the south, so everyone here is super friendly and its not hard to meet new people! Academically.. Tech definitely seems to be a good place to go for robotics. I know a lot of times when I'm reading an article or watching a show that is talking about robotics, something Tech's working on is going to be mentioned! One good thing about getting a PhD in Robotics, as opposed to a PhD in CS with an emphasis in robotics, is that you won't have to take courses in the core CS areas, such as architecture or operating systems, unless you want to! You pretty much go right into robotics stuff. When I visited, they told us that they start us doing research right away in our first year there. They also seemed incredibly open to collaborating with people other than your advisor, even those outside of the department. In fact, everyone is required to have a minor that will help supplement their research. That definitely seemed cool. Everyone there seemed really friendly. I'm not sure if it was just because it was the recruitment weekend or if that's how they were . And they were nice to me, even when I openly admitted my pride in their rival school!

lol, well i did back in grade school . I probably have a few friends who would still pinch me now.
-
..Or at the very least, I hope you remember to wear green so that you don't get pinched!
-
Anybody else going to (or considering) going to Tech next year? I'm going for robotics (PhD)! They're actually my school's rival, but I couldn't let my pride keep me from accepting a great program (academic program, that is..sports, not so much ). Hehe, I kid. Anyways, I'm pretty familiar(ish..I get lost without my GPS, but that's anywhere) with the Atlanta area if anyone has any questions about it!

I planned on making a paper mache' version of the rejecting school's mascot -- and then burning it. But I've only gotten email/website rejections, so theres nothing to mache'. Plus, the logical, reasonable, more sane me knows that once I made that paper mache' mascot, I would likely become fond of it, even start to love it, making my rejection worser still since I would never get to meet the real thing.

Yes, they were admitted into the MS program. In the results forum, it shows a couple people being admitted for masters at the same time last year
-
Here's mine! (I kinda just meshed all of my SOPS together lol)
-
two of my friends got admitted yesterday. good luck!
-
hah, I had one folder labeled "grad" and thats pretty much it. SOPs were tracked by nameofschoolSOP . transcripts, gre scorse, and other documents were just thrown in there. deadlines were listed on a single txt document. lol I live a disorganized life. this was actually better than I would usually do. I was able to keep track of things, no prob.

yay!! congratulations! I got the email too! Super excited
-
I agree..that's pretty much what I've been telling people
-
yea things did seem promising! hey, I bet I met you .. well at least its not the end of the week yet..I guess theres still time!
-
has anybody that applied to the school of interactive computing heard anything? They said they'd try to send notifications out by the first week of march..welll here we are! .. i hate waiting
-
ah, you guys were right . Only one fellowship allowed..I thought it would be ridiculous to have that much money in grad school -- I've been preparing to ball on a budget!
-
I was also wondering whether I could actually combine the two, but my advisor there was like "that'd be a double whammy if you got both!" so I'm assuming yes..but I don't know for sure.\ And yes, the deadline is likely April 15 for both schools, which is why I don't understand why he's pressuring me so much right now. I've told him I wanted to know all of my options first..but I do know that he just wants be to go there... Also, I agree that funding is not the only important thing..I definitely understand that, which is why this offer hasn't really changed my opinion that much. But I guess I just have to wait and see if Tech actually accepts me . And then I'll move on to the "April 15 FREAK OUT" forum

Across the Universe..about a girl who gets cryogenically frozen and is woken up on this space ship thats been flying through space for over 200 years..lol yea sometimes i read weird things...i also tend to read multiple books and never finish any of em..so I'm also reading Under the Dome by Stephen King and Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky

So I've been accepted (still unofficially..can I get some official news!?) to a school and am being offered a really nice fellowship..I'm also being considered for another fellowship, which would equate to an incredibly nice funding package...my summer advisor there/poi/recommender for other schools (which has made things really awkward at times) has kinda been pressuring me from day 1 to go there. He's a really great advisor--I would love to work with him..but I still feel like if I got accepted to Tech, I would want to go there...they just have a really good robotics/ai program. But when my advisor told me about the fellowship, he said it should be really hard to turn down now, that no other school would offer me such funding, and then was just like asking me what it would take for me to accept the offer..(As I was writing this, I got the official email -- yay!!!)....anyways...would I be crazy to turn this offer down, just because of funding?? Funding has always been in the back of my mind..as long as I could live I would be okay..

Looking for accommodation before being accepted?
closetgeek replied to ogopo's topic in Waiting it Out
lol! I've been doing the same thing..unfortunately, I've gotten rejected from a lot of the schools I found apartments for...practically signed the lease for! I wonder if i can sue the grad schools for my non-existent rent back .. I thought it was a fun way to pass time..and it might come in handy down the line -
I also applied for it..and haven't heard anything :/ . my status on the website said "matched" for a while, but now its back to unmatched
-
so I was thinking I was probably out of the CMU running .. but then I looked at the results for the robotics institute (I didn't apply to CS), and it seems like they send out their notifications around the 18th-23rdish .. also, I found this for their visit weekend: http://www.ri.cmu.edu/events/openhouse11.html which is different from what I've heard about the CS weekend .. so I'm going to keep the hope alive for a little longer!

glad to know my simple post could bring yalls spirits up!
