mrmedian Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Anyone headed to Cornell this Fall? I will likely be heading there (admitted, but haven't made up my mind). Anyone else have trouble submitting their response? I keep getting redirected to the application website.
narev Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 I had trouble submitting my response too, but I emailed the Department and they acknowledge there's some error. It's fixed for me though. I'll be heading there this Fall to do Statistics - just accepted their offer today.
CynthiaL Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 So deserted here... Nobody goes to Cornell, or people who choose Cornell does not care to meet people on-line?
Overtherainbow Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 I will be going to Cornell for PhD in Government. Does anyone know when we are going to receive our NetIDs? And is anyone else having trouble logging in at the new students website to fill in the required forms?
mrmedian Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 I read on the website that they send NetIDs via snail mail in early April. It seems rather arcane to me, alas! Considering how large Cornell is in general, I'm also surprised at how deserted it is. Has anyone found an apartment yet? I'm planning to fly up sometime in May to look, but I'm worried that is cutting things a bit close.
narev Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I received my NetID email today, three days after I confirmed my decision that I was going to Cornell.
Overtherainbow Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I still have not received my NetID email. How are people going to look for apartments? Is anyone planning to find the apartment from far away? I don't think I will be able to fly to Cornell before August, so that's the way I will be doing it.
udaybahal Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Hey , I am going to Cornell as well, any ideas about the housing situation in ithaca ? P.S - Still havent recieved my netid
narev Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 (edited) I've had an email from (on campus) Housing, and here's the gist of the email: An email with the following information is expected to be sent out to all applicants tomorrow. We just recently began assigning new residents, a process which takes several weeks. We plan to have the bulk of the assignments completed by mid-April, although assignments will continue to be made after that date. Students receiving an offer (we send them by email) will have 1 to 2 weeks to sign a contract online or decline the offer. In any event, we’ll provide you with an update at the end of April. Overtherainbow Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I have found several Gradcafe threads on housing in Ithaca, and it seems that many people do not like on-campus housing for graduate students. It seems to be far from the actual campus, not really conventient to get to due to the hills, somewhat small and expensive. Here are the threads:
narev Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 That is true. However, my plan at the moment is to spend first year trying to find good accommodation for second year onwards. What I have heard is that the good houses are usually taken by October-ish, so would be quite difficult (but admittedly not impossible) to find one now. Besides, as a first year, I guess having accommodation relatively close to campus is a plus - can't be smaller than my undergrad one
ladybug07 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 maybe my paranoia is seting in but i have yet to get my NETID and i submitted my decision awhile back. Also can you be sure that they got your affirmative response, is the green checkmark beside the statement "your decision form has been submitted" any indication. like i said i can get a bit paranoid about these things. can someone allay my fears? anyone?
Cogito Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Hey ladybug07, I also submitted my decison quite a while back. Still not a word on my NetID, and I still haven't heard about on-campus housing (they said they would let me know by tomorrow!). I too was feeling paranoid about not recieving my NetID--Glad I'm not the only one!
Cogito Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 So, I just received an email from Cornell housing offering me a spot in Hasbrouck. I've heard bad things about on-campus housing, and it is a bit more than I would like to pay, but I am tempted to take the offer!
narev Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Hmm..Have you emailed the program coordinator about accepting the offer? I emailed the Department as well as submitted my offer online, and I received my NetID two days later. On a side note, I've been offered Maplewood (which is quite expensive!) for housing this year - anyone else going to live there?
iamincontrolhere-haig Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I'm headed to Cornell in the fall to start a PhD in history. I just signed a lease for a nice one-bedroom apartment in Lower Collegetown, so it's nice to have that over and done with. I won't, however, feel completely stress-free until I receive my NetID! I called the graduate school about a week ago and the representative said they're behind schedule but assured me that NetID's were "forthcoming."
UofIgirl2000 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one who was becoming paranoid about the lack of NetID. If someone has theirs, can they let me know if the Off Campus Housing office resources are useful? I'm trying to find a two bedroom apartment on a bus route... I'm relocating with furniture, a cat, and a Ukrainian scholar writing his dissertation, and I did not expect housing to be so expensive.

I don't think you need your NetID to use the off-campus housing resources. I've been browsing their listings for the past couple of weeks. IMO, it is better than craigslist (though I also recommend looking there). Though I am likely going to choose on-campus housing, and look for off-campus housing next year. I emailed my graduate student representative a couple of days ago. They said they have had some technical issues with automatically processing matriculations for domestic students. Apparently they are using a new system and are still getting some of the kinks worked out. I think we can all relax though, they'll get it figured out! UofIgirl2000 1
Overtherainbow Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 If someone has theirs, can they let me know if the Off Campus Housing office resources are useful? Yes, you do not need a NetID to use Off Campus Housing office resources, e.g. subscribe to the OFSIL listserv. Not sure how useful that is: not much seems to be happening on the listserv lately. Boulder77 Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 I will be going to Cornell in the Fall. I received an email 2 days ago stating that my NetID was sent through snail mail.

I had not been able to access the listserv, but if no one is using it, I won't worry. Nervously watching the mail like a hawk for that NetID...
mrcrzister Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Hello fellow grad students, I am also heading to Cornell for PhD in math. I submitted my response in late March and I've recently received my netID, like a week ago! Also I will be in Maplewood, stress-free for first year housing
bosanbo Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Headed for Cornell's Department of Design and Environmental Analysis this Fall. Anyone else? We're moving across the country (myself, the man, the dog) and really hoping to actually meet people when we arrive. Our city is... socially difficult.
supriya84 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Could someone please post the link for off-campus housing for Cornell? Any particular list you are looking into? I only found the on-campus housing options. Would appreciate help. Thanks !
