Immuno Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 I will be receiving a stipend of 26k and full tuition reimbursement. Someone recently told me I should apply for financial aid for grad school, but I didn't think this was allowed since I am receiving a stipend. This may sound a bit greedy, but could I receive both? Thanks
risingsun11801 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 From what I've heard, it depends on the school whether you are allowed to receive other financial aid or not (read: loans). I highly doubt anyone with a stipend is eligible for more grants/scholarships/etc, but several current students I met while interviewing also took out student loans while receiving a stipend that is supposed to cover living expenses. To receive any student loans, you have to apply for financial aid for the school. Hope this helps!
lewin Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I don't know abou the U.S. but in Canada all government student loan programs require you to state all sources of income. I'm quite certain that receiving a stipend would put you above the point where youd' qualify. Maybe something similar in U.S.? Bank student loans were still available.

Thanks Yes you can. Usually you have to disclose other funding sources (or Financial Aid will already know from the department). If you think you will need additional money to pay for fees not covered in tuition reimbursement, books, or living expenses, then call and talk to the Financial Aid office about what you should apply for.
nari27 Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Yes you should apply! You may not be eligible for the need based scholarships, but there are still some merit-based scholarships that you can apply for and they do not matter how much money you're making. You may also be offered loans with low interest, just in case you might need them at some point in the semester.
psychgurl Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Apply to FAFSA, and I you'll find out how much you qualify for. You need to state all of your income sources. I'm currently trying to fill one out, even though I am going to receive a stipend for my program. Even having a small loan for every year would help me live much more comfortably, so that's why I'm filling out a FAFSA.
