Timshel Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 We have talked a lot on here about how important it is to professionalize yourself, and one of the ways you can do that is to be a part of a professional organization. Therefore, I thought this might be a good place to list some of the groups you are members of so others have an idea of what is out there. For example, I am a member of MLA and CEA(College English Association). What about everyone else?
wreckofthehope Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 MLA NeMLA SFRA (Science Fiction Research Association) ASLE (Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment) Northern Research Network ASLE is by far the most useful and rewarding membership I have. It's a really active and lively organization and there's a huge amount of generosity from more established scholars towards grad students.
JeremiahParadise Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 PCA/ACA -- Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association (I joined because I had a paper accepted for last year's conference.) BSA -- Beat Studies Association (I've found this one to be super helpful in staying abreast of the field's latest topics/papers/publications thanks to its listserv.)
id quid Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Not a member, but associations that have come up for me: Medieval Academy of America ANZAMEMS (Australia and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies) Celtic Studies Association of America Medieval Institute @ WMU-Kalamazoo Renaissance Society of America Medieval Association of the Pacific -- Curious, as a point of order: what qualifies as a "professional organization"? Maybe it's just medieval studies, but there seem to be quite a few societies/organizations that are a bit muddled about what they actually do. They don't necessarily have membership, but perhaps they have a journal, or a regular conference, or regular special faculty organizers, etc.
