Does anyone find it suspicious that everyone that has heard from Stanford Statistics Master's has gotten in. There's 10+ people who have posted that they have gotten in (including me) and it makes me a little suspicious about the letter. Not to mention that they are only expecting an incoming class of 20. It seems like it's the most consecutive acceptances reported from any school so far. Anyone else have similar sentiments? Am I just super paranoid? It's my dream school and would be such a soul crushing moment to have it taken away...

Don't be paranoid. They should have given you a student ID to log in with. Use it. They don't provide that for those who get rejected. You are clearly in. Congrats. :]

Many schools have a policy of informing the accepted students first. As a fellow Stanford Statistics student, we should always recognize a "selection bias!" :)

Thanks. They did give me a student ID which is good. It's just people reporting to get in with GPAs .3 below their average and the sheer number of accepted students who posted in the results survey has me worried. Also the accepted person who wrote "ad = rej" in the notes seemed like something fishy. I guess I'll call in the morning to make sure but your post will help me sleep tonight at least :).

Congratulations! I am also planning to go to the Stanford program. I just have a question. Where did you hear about the 20-student class size?

Posted

It should be in the email:

"Of the 285 applicants wehad this year, we expect approximately 20 students to join our program next year."

I'm heavily considering doing so. William.g.lane, would you happen to have any thoughts about living in graduate dorms versus living off campus?

Out of those who are going, how are you paying for it?

Does anyone know more detailed about what the estimated cost was based on? It seems a bit too high to just be the cost of tuition/books, but way too low to include living expenses based on the tuition schedule and estimated student budget.

I'm also not sure that seems right.

According to the website:

45 units to graduate

Lets say at the normal load of 12 months (four quarters). That's an average of 11.25 units per quarter.

At $13750 per quarter that's 55k for tuition until graduation. Plus the estimated living expenses for 12 months, which is 33k.

That comes out to be nearly 90k.

If we do the accelarated load of 9 months (3 quarters), then it's 15 units per quarter. 41k for tuition. 26k for living expenses. Still comes out to be over 60k.

If you take 10 units of courses a quarter, then it's $8940 a quarter. It should then take five quarters to finish the degree, which is about 45k.

I also think 33k is an overestimate of living expenses. If you live in a double room and the housing will cost $7600 for a full year and 10k for five quarters.

And Assume that you cook very often, then you can probably keep the food cost under $6000 for five quarters. Then we add the health insurance and other costs, we can probably keep the total cost under 23k for 5 quarters.

Plus 45k for tuition, then it should be approximately 68k.

I personally think that it's a reasonable amount for a master's program.

Has anyone proceeded to request their SUNet IDs (I know they want us to do it whether we accept or decline)? I requested mine Thursday night, but it's still pending. :/

It's pending for me as well... Are you going to accept it?

Not completely sure. Need to make sure I'm good on finances before proceeding. 75% probability at this point, I think?

For others who were admitted: You need to first request/create your SUNet ID before accepting the offer(could take 24 hours or longer). So if you waited until 4/15 to create the account, it won't be ready before the deadline, and you'd be screwed. :/

Something's wrong with their system. When my account was approved I could only see the "STARS(Training)" tab. I opened a HelpSU ticket and someone gave me access to the "Home" and "Student Center" tabs. The Home tab should have the link to accept.

I'm going next year for sure now. The SUNet ID thing was annoying as I had to call into the help desk to get it activated (I also created it on Thursday and called on Monday). You also can't see the "Graduate admissions" link until a few hours after your SUNet ID is approved so be aware.

See you all this fall!!!
