Creme Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I managed to get into the Aerospace MSE program at UMICH by the grace of God. But didn't come with any funding whatsoever. As an international student pursuing MS I'm not eligible for any fellowship, GSRA as well as loans. Wanted to find out whether anyone was able to get a scholarship or TA in his/ her first year at UMICH aerospace engineering (MSE).
spacecase618 Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) I applied to the PhD Aero program as a US citizen but didnt get in. THey gave me the MSE program as a consolation prize though but didnt mention anything about funding. :/ Unfortunately, if they had any TA or scholarships, they probably would have offered them already so I think were a bit out of luck. beingBerlin Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 @spacecase618......when did u receive admit decisions from UMD and Gatech......(when did u complete the application form)
spacecase618 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I heard back officially from UMD around a week or so ago but knew unofficially since the end of march. I heard back from GaTech and was invited to the open house around Feb. I applied to both around the same time, which was mid Jan.
Creme Posted April 11, 2012 Author Posted April 11, 2012 Is it possible to get funding in the second year of the masters program?
beingBerlin Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 @spacecase618 Any word on funding from Gatech or UMD..... You got admission result Pretty quick, I applied in Mid December but haven't heard back from them yet
spacecase618 Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Yeah. Both schools operate on a fully funded system for the most part. I know some ppl who still havent heard back from UMD even though they know thyere unofficially in though. the school just takes their time.
andrea11hr Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Hi, i wasnt accepted to Michigan PhD, but they told me they would recommend my admission to the MSE program. they didn't say anything about funding and I'm an international student as well. Is it really that expensive? Like 55 thousand per year? They told me that GSI postions were given usually to PhD students and they worked on this around July. According to College of Engineering rules "no fellowships can be awarded to M.S.E. students.". About RA positions, I would have to contact to faculty members directly and "Additionally, there are a variety of "work study" jobs, and other jobs available through the University." Please if anyone knows if you can get a job at least in the second semester. Or is it preferrably to wait to the second year.
Creme Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 Exactly the same thing I was told. Its very expensive, about 60,000. Professor I want to work with said it takes about a year before new students to get acquainted with the equipment and experiments so its probably the second semester that I can be an RA. Currently combing all areas for funding. Praying for a miracle. Which area of specialization?
spacecase618 Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 yeah.... UMich in state tuition is higher than my state's out of state tuition...
