bellefast Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Despite my requirements in my program, can I essentially take any classes I want to develop myself and my research? Thank you all!
robot_hamster Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 I depends on the program. For me, I have a lot of freedom as far as classes go. My adviser has suggested tons of classes that are outside my department because they looked like they would be helpful for what I am interested in.
Eigen Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 What RH said. I can take pretty much whatever I want. And I now take advantage by siting in on things I'm interested in.
bellefast Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 What RH said. I can take pretty much whatever I want. And I now take advantage by siting in on things I'm interested in. How do you sit in? Do you make an appointment with the teacher? an agreement?
bellefast Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 You just ask them if you can sit in usually. Cool. I think I will try that for classes that I am interested in and cannot take. So I should ask my advisor about whether I have freedom to take what I want? How would that be worded?
robot_hamster Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 (edited) I would ask your adviser how much flexibility you have. Are there required courses? Some programs have them. Even if you have a lot of freedom, your adviser may still want to know what classes you want to take and why. Generally they want to make sure you're doing something that would be beneficial for you.
