carafromlondon Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 Hello everyone, I'm moving to New York this Fall to study at Parsons for an MFA in Fine Arts. I'm very excited about moving to NY but as I live in London, it has been a little daunting trying to find a place to live. I end up with 20+ tabs open on my browser and feeling overwhelmed by it all! Can anyone offer any advice on how to find a room to rent? I have looked in to the student residences that Parsons offer but have decided against it as the rent is very expensive.
leee Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Depending on what area you would like to live in search realty companies or you can check on craigs list. Brooklyn will be much cheaper than Manhattan but you will have a 15 - 30 minute subway ride every day, which is something to take into consideration both financially and distance from studio. You can also try giving Parsons a call and speaking with someone in the graduate program or the international office and they may be able to offer some advice.
frez83 Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Craigslist is the best place to find a room if you don't know anybody personally with one. I wouldn't look more than 2 weeks before you're ready to move in. Things work quickly in NY so looking much before that will be mostly a waste of time. I went to Parsons in undergrad, a lot of students live in BK, many of them off the L train, but union square is easy to commute to from anywhere in NYC.
