Purfvfet Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Hey all I know it is probably a little too late but I want to apply for MS Statistics/Maths this fall. Are there any universities that are still accepting MS applications ? If not, what are the advantages/disadvantages of applying for MS in spring.
Purfvfet Posted June 10, 2012 Author Posted June 10, 2012 I had applied for a PhD in Statistics (Fall 2012) but I didn't have much luck barring a couple of not so good universities which admitted me without financial aid. So I am planning to apply for MS in Spring/Fall 2013. I am a little undecided about whether I should do MS Maths/Statistics. I have a few queries regarding same. 1. I have both my undergraduate and masters degrees in Statistics. However, I have done courses like Real Analysis, Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus in my masters. What are my chances of getting accepted in a MS Maths program ? 2. Which combination would be academically more favorable if and when I apply for PhD in Statistics again ? B.Sc. (Stats) + M.Sc. (Stats) + M.S (Stats) OR B.Sc. (Stats) + M.Sc. (Stats) + M.S.(Maths)
wine in coffee cups Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 You already have a master's in stats and are looking for another master's? I'm not sure that stats master's programs would be willing to accept an applicant who already has the degree they would award. This is something for you to investigate before you go down this road. But let's step back. I'm sorry to hear PhD applications did not go as hoped for this year. Why do you think that was? And what specifically about an additional master's degree would rectify those particular deficiencies in your application, since it sounds like your coursework is already good?
Purfvfet Posted June 11, 2012 Author Posted June 11, 2012 (edited) Thanks for your reply. The thing is I didn't do as well as I intended to in my M.Sc. The first two semesters were really good when my GPA was close to 3.6 mark but after that everything just started going downhill when I started having some non-academic problems I couldn't deal with then. So my GPA slid down to 2.9 at the end of the fourth semester.I don't want to live with a GPA that will hinder my chances(like it did) of getting admitted to a PhD program into a good university even in Spring/Fall 2013. So I was thinking why not apply for a MS program ? I think it will give me a chance to improve my grades and also it will help me prepare better for my PhD. Edited June 11, 2012 by Purfvfet
