kxxx Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Anyone have thoughts, opinions, experience with Simmons gender/cultural studies MA? I'm debating what sorts of programs are best suited to my interests, but mostly looking for interdisc. ones that I can focus on queer theory/studies and visual politics some way or another. On paper (well, on screen to be more literal) Simmons looks pretty interesting, but I don't know anyone whose ever attended or applied for that program.
wcehfa Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 I got my MA at Simmons in the GCS program (2009) . Its definitely a good place for interdisciplinary work but definitely stronger in the gender and queer theory areas than visual studies (at least when I was there). Having said that - I am now in a doctoral program that focuses on media studies and visual culture, so the fact that there was not a huge visual studies focus there did not shut down the possibility of doing work in that area. The faculty were supportive and encouraging. The students are a mixed bag - I can only speak to my cohort but from that group people have gone on to work in nonprofits, pursue MSWs as well as going on to doctoral programs in various disciplines. Also - Simmons participates in the Graduate Consortium of Women's Studies at MIT which sometimes offers queer theory related classes. Hope this helps!
kxxx Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 Thanks for the reply! So, would you say it's worth the money and time? I've just heard really mixed reviews about the school, but I suppose generally only the disappointed folks would bother posting a review.
