  1. I got my MA at Simmons in the GCS program (2009) . Its definitely a good place for interdisciplinary work but definitely stronger in the gender and queer theory areas than visual studies (at least when I was there). Having said that - I am now in a doctoral program that focuses on media studies and visual culture, so the fact that there was not a huge visual studies focus there did not shut down the possibility of doing work in that area. The faculty were supportive and encouraging. The students are a mixed bag - I can only speak to my cohort but from that group people have gone on to work in nonprofits, pursue MSWs as well as going on to doctoral programs in various disciplines. Also - Simmons participates in the Graduate Consortium of Women's Studies at MIT which sometimes offers queer theory related classes. Hope this helps!
  2. waiting, still waiting...

  3. Well, I happen to know people that have done the GCS program and have gone on to sociology doctoral programs. I myself am waiting to hear back from a communication & rhetoric program and have been accepted to an African American studies program after finishing up the GCS program at Simmons. I would suggest that since you know what kind of program you want to do, you tailor your experience at Simmons accordingly. Seek out sociology professors as your mentors (like prof. Puri, who directed the GCS program for the first year I was there) and apply to TA for a sociology class. Basically, you will want to sell yourself to doctoral programs as someone who has both pursued sociology and has a little something extra to offer and I don't think that can hurt, it may very well help you stand out from straight up sociology B.A.s and M.A.s Good luck!
  4. Hey, lovely to find someone talking about this. I applied to Indiana U.'s new African American and African Diaspora program and was recently accepted - waiting to hear about funding. Does anyone have some insight into the program (any people that have gotten an M.A. from there?) (I'm still waiting to hear from one other program as well - so my future is still but a foggy jumble of unmade decisions..) Oh and research interests : representations of race and gender, particularly masculinity and new media.
