No funding info from UCSB.. was thinking about emailing. Any idea on cost of living there?

Has anyone heard from UCSB regarding funding?

I haven't, but the initial admission email they sent said:  "Nearly 100% of Materials students are supported on Research Assistantships"

And on the UCSB Materials website it states: "Students admitted to the Materials Department are appointed as Graduate Student Researchers (GSR) and are generally supported by funds from research grants and contracts obtained by Department faculty. Currently, the GSR appointments include an annual stipend of $28,000 plus payment of registration, tuition, and health insurance fees." http://www.materials.ucsb.edu/costs.php

But yea, it would be nice if they directly informed us instead of speculating

Awesome, health insurance! Sweet, housing look around ~$10,000 or less. Not as bad as I imagined..

I sent an email saying "Hello, I received an official admission to the grad program requesting that I sign an intent to register. I was wondering if there is a timeline on when I would receive info regarding funding." and received back "The deadline is April 15th.

Best,

Oura"

So, whatever that means.

Hmm, maybe Oura read your email too quickly and didn't see the part on funding? If not, that was a bit rude on Oura's part.

Its all sorted out. I apologized for my poor phrasing and asked a little more directly. She responded with "The first quarter, you will be either supported by our department or your advisor.  The quarter then on, you will be supported by your advisor.  Our students are fully funded and employed as a GSR.  Is this the information you were looking for?

Please let me know if you need any further details.

Best,

Oura"

Until I sign a paper with my stipend written down on it, I suppose this is the best information I will be getting.

Talked to a Cornell professor. He said that admits will be sent out right until the end of February. They have started with domestic applicants. International students should expect to start hearing back around mid February.

Hey lionhunter, do you think this is the case with other universities too? Are admits to International students generally given at a later date?

I wonder if that berkeley rejection is real.. it seems early o.o

apologies if that's you!

Someone got accepted and rejected in the future based on the dates. I'm frightened. Time dilation is striking.

lol...when you enter a decision, it sometimes defaults to the next day (probably UT).  ^_^

Thought you guys should know that SEAS at Harvard released decisions on Materials Science folks. I'm been watching this forum eagerly awaiting results but heard back from them today (accepted). Good luck the rest of you!

I saw a MIT admission with gpa of ~3.5 :D are my eyes working fine ???

Good for MIT to look past purely gpa. There's plenty of factors that can explain a non-4.0 gpa, shouldn't get in the way of a good research candidate

Very possibly an undergrad at mit, caltech, or some other school that is notorious for grading hard. Maybe not though  :)

I got passed over the first round I guess, but I'm not that bummed about it thankfully. Probably don't like me because I'm not from a well-known undergrad  <_< But I'm still hopeful. I'd settle for harvard  :P

Did anyone else who got into MIT get two emails?  I got one from Angelita Mireles and a second from Dr. Van Vliet.  I'm trying to determine if Dr. Van Vliet's email was a mass email, or whether it's something requiring a response.  Her research doesn't seem to relate to my interests very closely, hence my confusion.

Side note: I got my acceptance letter from Penn State today (I posted in the results section), but to those of you who applied to Penn State: don't be concerned if you haven't received yours yet.  I'm an undergrad at Penn State, so the letter only had to travel a few blocks to reach me.  Good luck to everyone who applied!

Yea I got two emails as well, first from Angelita Mireles and second from Dr. Antoine Allanore, whose research doesn't align with my interests either. I wasn't going to respond until you brought this up, so thanks. I'm still not sure what I would say, so please let me now how you plan on dealing with it  :)

My friend who also got in received an email from a professor she met with during the application period before the Angelita Mireles email last night, so her personal email was at least from a POI.

And I almost forgot, Congrats!!

Hey airdonut, do you know which Stanford faculty you're planning to meet with? I'm interested in Shan Wang and Paul McIntyre, not really sure after that. And did you know they were planning to keep us in a hotel both nights? I booked my tickets before I got the email from Fi yesterday, so I'm leaving 6am Saturday morning, woops...

My guess is that they divided accepted students among professors to send those semi-personal emails.  I don't think I'm going to respond unless I have any questions before my visit, which I find rather unlikely.

And as far as Stanford, I want to meet with McGehee, Brongersma, Dionne, and either Cui or Clemens.  What's your interest/background?  My original acceptance to Stanford said "A  hotel room has been reserved to accommodate your stay at our expense for Thursday and Friday nights". I assume it was the same for everyone, but I'll be in a similar situation as you; I fly out at 8 the following morning.
