sacklunch Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I'm surprised I have not seen any other posts about ETS' new policy (starting this month) that folks can send specific GRE tests to schools rather than have every test taken within 5 years sent. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I, for one, am pretty stoked about the new policy. I have only taken the test twice, but I plan to take it at least several more times to ensure a competitive score. And now we don't have to worry about School X wondering why you took the test 6 times (ETS claims there will be no indication of how many times you have taken the test). cheers sacklunch 1
GreenePony Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I think I would be excited if I were applying this year (I was not pleased with my quant score, meh overall, good for my field but terrible compared to DH's 2 points shy of perfect). I wonder how/if this will affect adcoms since I'm sure they will know about this and realize that scores can be a bit more carefully groomed on the student's side as opposed to seeing a fuller range of how the student can do on standardized exams.
sacklunch Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 I was also wondering how adcoms will view the change. Hopefully the GRE will become less important because of this. Either way, I'm happy that I can take the damn thing as many times (as allowed per year) as need be without having a red flag raised as to why I took the thing 10 times. sacklunch 1
edgirl Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Just as an FYI, there was some conversation about this on these boards when the announcement about the new Score Choice policy was made a couple months ago. And remember, although ETS is doing its best to encourage you to take the GRE over and over again, the cost of the GRE is rising to $175, and to use Score Choice you may have to wait until after your test date to send score reports -- at $25 per school -- if you don't want to send all or only the most recent results (i.e., if you actually want to take advantage of the service ...). edgirl 1
Eigen Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 It's a ploy from ETS to get more money, which will work because lots of people who overestimate the importance of GRE scores will take it lots of times and send the best scores. And Adcom's will start to get more and more suspicious of high scores without correlation from GPA, letters, etc. But since GRE scores are already probably the least important part of your application, this shouldn't have a very significant effect. Definitely a move that de-legitimizes the test from an Adcoms perspective, though. ETS is really pushing it. edgirl 1
