2400 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I am a phd student in social sciences and have been trying to write the first of three findings chapters. I came back from my fieldwork with a lot of data (probably too much) and have been trying to figure out how to structure my data into a decent chapter. I went through several months using NVivo to code everything. I know the major themes emering from the transcripts. However, I am having difficulty just figuring out how to write it up and present it in a logical way. If anyone has any tips for me, I would really appreciate it. Everything is there in the data and I have written sevearl drafts, but its just not coming together (and the only advice I get from my supervisor is to just write it). I feel like I have hit a brick will - maybe writers block - and need to get through it before my deadline (in two months).
Dal PhDer Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 I might try using some kind of thought/mind mapping technique/software. I have found that this is a really great way to organize data, themes, thoughts, objectives, literature...it will get you thinking about how your themes and data relate to each other, how they organize under the themes, and how you can present them in a coherent and succinct way.
rising_star Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 You might try picking a key story/quote from the themes, something that ties a few of them together ideally, and using that to help you organize a chapter. Or, as my advisor would say, you should think about what claims you want to make, then figure out what data you have to support that claim. You then use the claims that are closely related to one another to form a chapter.
