I just took the time to look at last year's awardees for my discipline (Geosciences), and was somewhat disturbed to learn that 80% (4/6) awardees are at MIT (including WHOI). The other two are at Harvard and Caltech. I understand about self-selection, but jeez, come on. That 80% seems statistically improbable to me, considering that MIT is not even considered to be at the top of the field. I suppose it's possible that the department just does a good job of encouraging/helping their students to apply... Another consideration is the oceanography bent of the NDSEG committee, an area MIT is particularly strong in.

On another note: Mid-April?!? WTF???

Does mid-April mean before or after April 15? It would be nice to know before deciding where to go.

Man...I hope its before...If I win, I was gonna try and wriggle my way into Berkeley...

Moreover, a question for you guys. If I were to go to UCSD for a masters in Bioengineering and complete it in about a year and a half and then applied to Berkeley (in the Fall of 2007) what would be my chances? Would Berkeley care about my undergrad stts or my grad stats? Would they look down on me coming in with a masters? For reference, these are my undergrad stats:

GPA (in major and overall): 3.7

GRE: 800Q, 630V, 5.5A (second time) and 720Q, 590V, 5.5A (first time...don't ask :))

Publications: 2 conference publications (in international conferences, 1 as first author), 2 (maybe 3) international journal publications (2 as first author)

so I called them up on Thursday and asked if they planned on announcing before April 15 and the answer was: that's our goal, but we can't promise. at least they're aware that it's time-sensitive, even if they're behind.

Thanks for posting the results of your phone call. It always helps to be able to read the latest updates without bombarding them with phone calls ourselves. They should really put up a blog or something.

Anyways, I don't think it really matters that much if it comes before or after April 15th. I've always felt that the April 15th commitments are always soft anyways. You could call back a few days later and change your mind, I feel. What do you guys think?

Has anyone else called in recently to get an update on when they'll post the results?

I called yesterday and they said they hope to send out emails "in the next couple of days".

If it is like the NSF, they will send emails before they post the list, which means my compulsive website checking will probably be all for naught.
