Comp. Lit. programs with translation courses

In looking at comp. lit. programs for this upcoming cycle, I started wondering about which schools have a more or less fixed offering of a translation course. I figure this might be useful for others in the same boat.

Harvard: "On Translation," involving final project

UMich: translation workshops and seminar in translation

Iowa and Arkansas both have MFAs in translation, so their comp lit programs may provide some good opportunities for translation. Brown has a translation track in their undergrad program, and Brown generally supports interdisciplinary studies, so seems like there might be good support for this there as well.

This also seems like a great question to reach out to a DGS about.

I think UCSB has a focus on translation.

Imogene, that's a good point. I did want to get in touch with DGS's or graduate admissions for comp lit departments about writing samples, so maybe I'll make that a secondary point to address.

UC-Irvine is home to the International Center for Writing and Translation. I have friends who obtained fellowships here.

Indiana University's Comparative Literature program has a translation certificate that you can earn in addition to an MA or PhD. The certificate involves a translation workshop and seminar plus ~16 units of additional classes. There are two quite distinguished, award-winning faculty members in the IU program. I'd like to put in a good word for Indiana. I did my undergrad there, and though I wasn't a comp lit major, because I of the majors I did have, I had a number of classes with the CL faculty. They were great, the overall offerings of the university were great, and the town's pretty great, too.

If I could respectably go back and do graduate work there, I would.

I'm surprised WashU hasn't been mentioned yet. They've got some of the top Translation Studies scholars (Gerhild Williams, Rebecca Copeland, Robert Hegel)  and offer a whole slew of translation classes. In addition, they offer a Translation Studies Graduate Certificate (https://complit.wustl.edu/translation-studies-requirements). Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I definitely appreciate all of the information on schools. At this point, I've come up with a list of 13 schools, and I've had to forgo schools with established translation centers for resources in my field. Hopefully this is helpful for others who might find a good fit for them at the mentioned institutions.
