quantumcat Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Hello! I'm applying for chemistry PhD programs this fall. I just received my GRE scores: Q: 158 V: 156 W: 4 Will a 4 on the writing section hurt in the application process? Or do programs not really even look at the writing section? Thanks!
Azarashi1 Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 (edited) I'm appying this year too, so I am not by any means an expert, but what I was told is that AWA is almost never considered, especially if your verbal score is high and if you are applying for a program which isn't heavy on the writing (e.g., english). What I've heard a lot is that if you write a good sop, it will even out your analytical score. (BTW, I am in your same exact situation: my AWA score is 4, plus I am a non native speaker...) sareth Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 When I was applying many of the applications asked me to self-report my quant and verbal scores but didn't even ask for my AWA score (of course they did receive it from ETS on the official report). I don't think most programs in chemistry care about the AWA much if at all, and I agree with Azarashi1 - you should be fine with a 4 and a strong, well-written SOP.
MoJingly Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I got a 4 too. My PI at the time made me paranoid that it was a huge red glad on my record. But I still got the interview! I asked in my interview if that is hurting my application and the prof said, "it's ok. Won't hurt you." I'm in my second year at that program. So... you might be fine. It probably depends on the school (and the rest of your application). Good luck!!
iowaguy Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I think in the sciences no one is going to give it much attention. It was optional a few years ago when I last took the GRE...
