Cmere Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Just wanted to know where everyone applied to, first choices and who's already been accepted/rejected. I should be hearing about Northwestern and Arizona State soon. Columbia is still another month away.
carlstreator Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I applied to Columbia, Missouri, Northwestern, and NYU. I got in everywhere, except Columbia, where I'm waitlisted. Bleh. As it stands, I'm planning to go to Northwestern in the Fall, as NYU offered me nothing in terms of grants or scholarships. If I get off the waitlist at Columbia, say in June, I have no idea what I'm gonna do.

I accepted Syracuse's offer because of a tiny scholarship that was still more than what everyone else gave me.... But if Columbia gets back to me....who knows....
postgrad10 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Accepted: UC Berkeley, Northwestern (Medill) Boo: Columbia (couldn't afford, did undergrad in NYC would rather change it up), UNC (couldn't care less, not sure why I applied) Still waiting on one. Thinking that means my rejection got lost in the mail, but this particular school has lost other parts of my application already. It's been a pain in the butt. I don't think I want to go anyway if this is the pre-attending state. I won't list the name just now. Accepted/Rejected to other non-journalism programs, pretty dead-set on Berkeley (fellowship helps, but it was first choice going in - note: documentary focus) All-in-all, happy with the way things turned out. Just waiting to hear about my complete financial packages...
flipacoin Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Applied and accepted to Berkeley and Columbia for New Media concentration. Offered a Berkeley fellowship that almost covers tuition, but the big cost is living for 2 years. Still waiting to hear about $$ from Columbia, which is essentially more important that even getting in. I'm having a horrible time deciding between the 2: Berkeley has a better programs, but it would be great to get an Ivy Masters in 1 year!
Jae B. Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Applied and accepted to Berkeley and Columbia, magazine concentration. Ditto -- hearing financial aid from Columbia will be extremely important! I'm kind of hoping financial aid makes my decision for me. Otherwise, this is going to be a tough one.
newsjunkie Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I got accepted to Columbia - Digital Media, CUNY Journalism, NYU Studio 20 and American. I got merit aid from CUNY and NYU, but since I haven't yet heard about aid from Columbia, I haven't yet made a final decision.

I'm wondering, between CUNY and NYU, do you know your top choice? CUNY was off my radar until recently (is it newer?) and I don't know much about it, but I nearly applied to NYU's "Reporting New York" program -- very interesting school! Are you visiting the schools? Edited March 27, 2010 by Jae B.
newsjunkie Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Wow, congratulations! I'm wondering, between CUNY and NYU, do you know your top choice? CUNY was off my radar until recently (is it newer?) and I don't know much about it, but I nearly applied to NYU's "Reporting New York" program -- very interesting school! Are you visiting the schools? Thanks! Yes, Cuny is pretty new, I think it only opened in 2006 and it already has a pretty good reputation. Check out the website if you're interested: http://www.journalism.cuny.edu/ I think between NYU and CUNY, I'm leaning towards CUNY because of price, and a greater choice of courses and a larger faculty. The program I applied to at NYU is I think a little less structured and more project based and seemed to have slightly fewer course offerings, and I think CUNY would provide a more systematic instruction in multimedia. I'm not sure yet if I'm visiting, my mother has been encouraging me to, although I've actually already visited both briefly. CUNY had a summer academy for prospective students last summer over a few days that I participated in and I also went to an info session at Columbia last summer, that was pretty brief, although I'd also been on the Columbia campus before. One consideration is actually being on campus with accepted students and getting more of an impression of the student body. On the other hand, for Columbia, I know two people from my undergrad who I could also talk to about their experience. Plus both open houses happen to fall during a busy time in my semester and I'd have to figure out the logistics......still contemplating whether I'll go...

Heh, "project-based" education isn't exactly my cup of tea, either. How did you like Columbia first-hand? I've never been and won't get to go before making a decision -- both the timing and expense are too much for me. (I live in California.) I've got an obvious slant towards my other option, Berkeley, because it's my undergrad and I know a lot about the program. I feel slightly under-informed about Columbia, in comparison. Not really program specifics, but the student experience and after-value. The open houses certainly are during a busy time of the semester. I still need to focus on my upcoming graduation, but can't help spending a sizable portion of my time mulling over my near-future in grad school.
newsjunkie Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I didn't see that much of the journalism school specifically, I was mainly in a small meeting room in the building for the info session and I saw some students working on computers in part of the student center, but I didn't see that much else specifically because there weren't any tours. Just in general though, Columbia as a whole does have a very nice campus - I did a summer program there a couple of years ago and lived in one of the dorms.

How cool, that you've already taken classes there.
newsjunkie Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 There's also an official Facebook group that you can request to join. Not much going on there yet, but does give some idea of who fellow students might be: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=113107955367602

Is that the group you have to register as a Columbia student to join? It's good to know not much is going on there yet, though.
