This is the first scholarly work I've had to read... can anyone help me break it down part by part?

I have, and I wont. I will suggest you go look at JSTOR for book reviews. Those wont help you if you haven't read the book, but they will help you understand what other people thought were important. I would suggest reading several from several different kinds of journals because that book is working on a number of levels.
