hypothesizer Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Came across an NY times article, some proof that I am not the only who thinks something's off with the idea of diversity http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/19/opinion/class-based-vs-race-based-admissions.html I think that the idea of "promoting" diversity is a half-baked one at best and that's what I have been saying all along.
runaway Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 hypothesizer, I think you missed the part where admissions at the graduate level do not prioritize race over socio-economic status, or any other definition of diversity, for that matter. now why don't you go run off and write about your back hair? virmundi, Two Espressos, musichistorygeek and 1 other 4

Bravo, Runaway. I wish I could uptick your post more than a single time. It is rather obnoxious that so many choose to define "diversity" within narrow confines and then project their narrow definition onto the word as it appears in other contexts. A statement of diversity is quite valuable in terms of having the ability to pitch yourself to a graduate program specifically in terms of how you will make a graduate cohort and program a more interesting, unique, and altogether exceptional place that encourages and supports intellectual exchange and rigor. If you can't manage to articulate who you are/what you have done that makes you stand out as a unique individual on the planet, be assured that a graduate program will (rightly) choose the more interesting person whose credentials are also equally matched. virmundi 1
