Dotlock Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Hello! This is probably an easy question that I should know, but I'm filling in an online PhD application and am listing a publication. The problem is, the entire format of the application is completely in plain text (ie. no italics). In MLA format, do you put a single quotation mark, double quotation mark or just leave names of journals when it is impossible to italicize? Here's to being too dependant on Microsoft Word! Thanks for any help in advance.
Datatape Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 I'd... be inclined to say just leave the title of the journal as is. But I don't have any particular reason for saying that, i.e. no particular rule I can point to. I would assume that since it's supposed to be in italics, just leave it as it would be as though you had access to italics - capitalize the words that need capitalizing and leave the rest as is.
Magical Realist Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Not really a positive contribution here, but I must say, the idea of having "access" to italics made me giggle quite a lot.
pinkrobot Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I remember that I used underscores: after reading _X_, I developed an interest in . . . Hope this isn't too late to be of use! Datatape 1
Datatape Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Ohhh, that's a good idea. I may have to steal that for future use.
