Has any one been admitted to a school without a subject GRE where this test was optional?

Did you mean to write "recommended" instead of optional?

I think the vast majority of applicants do not take a subject test, and the majority of programs don't request it either. For schools that "recommend" it, however, I've heard that's basically a euphemism for required and very few get in without it.
