ChemLeg Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 My friend was not smart - he aimed high, but hasn't heard anything, and is nervous with no responses. I'm sure that a few people here have already heard "no" or you just were wondering where else you can apply while waiting for acceptances. I figured I might as well start a list of places that are still open (that is, deadlines are after the 25th of January): Notre Dame: http://chemistry.nd.edu/graduate-programs/admission-requirements/ free to apply for domestic applicants Univ Nevada - Las Vegas: http://www.unlv.edu/chemistry/admissions Louisiana State University at Tulane: http://tulane.edu/sse/chem/academics/graduate/graduate-admissions/admissions.cfm (application fee waived, official GRE needed). March 15th - very late. (I really have no clue) There are rolling admissions locations, like Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. Problem is that they could have a bunch of spots now, but close within three days, and will not start looking until all items are received (GRE, transcripts, letters). Does anyone else have suggestions for where to apply with a deadline a week or more away?
synorg Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 just an fyi, tulane is not a state university of louisiana. it has no affiliation with lsu. Quant_Liz_Lemon 1
Faraday Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Without knowing his individual cirucmstances it is hard to say, but it's still pretty early so I am not sure he needs to start panicking. That said, if he aimed high then that to me says something about his goals for a PhD program, so why would he all of a sudden now want to apply to "safety" schools? If he really wants to go to a top institution then why settle for someplace else? It would probably be better to ackowledge where he needs to improve his application to get into one of those schools and work for a future application season to fix that. UBackwardsChemistry 1
ChemLeg Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Wait, so this list is pretty much useless?

Wait, so this list is pretty much useless? Not necessarily. I think Faraday is wondering why he all of a sudden wants to apply to safety schools. Certainly it seems some folks are primarily concerned with the reputation of the school they study at, while others place more weight on finding PI's they are most excited to work with. If your friend places considerable weight on high end programs, it seems he should just re-apply next year if nothing pans out, rather than jump into any old department that will take him last minute.
bskaplan Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Deadline for Syracuse University is March 15th. stranger2013 1
