ACM88 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I don't know if there are a lot of people on TGC who have applied to Yale's Forestry and Environmental Studies department, but I thought I'd check and see. Is anyone else waiting to hear back and nervous about their admissions? I visited back in December and have pretty strong support from a professor in the department, which is really exciting, but I'm not sure how much influence that has on admissions decisions. I was feeling pretty good about my chances until the other day when I watched a video on the FES webpage where the Chair of Graduate Studies said that they typically accept less than 10% of the applicants to the program. So...now I'm not feeling too good about it. Anyone else in the same boat? I'm hoping the results come out soon, but it's so hard to know how strong your application is relative to others. *fingers crossed*
Ramya Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Hey, I have applied to FES but to the joint Anthro-FES program. I am guessing the results should be out soon enough. Have you had a formal interview?
Vader Was Framed Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 ACM - I think it does matter (your support from a Prof). I believe at some point in the FES admissions process the POI has to weigh in and show support for your app. I forget if this is a prereq to it then being sent for review of full committee or after committee has read it. Either way, it's important. Are you coming straight from undergrad? I'm not applying this year, but planning to apply next year. I learned FES typically has ~12 slots and 200-250 applicants. So yes, extremely competitive. Also learned that current masters students at Yale can eat into that of course (as they should). Mind sharing what Prof you've had good communication with? What was your visit like? Did you set up meetings with POIs? I've never been to the Yale campus, Kroon hall looks stellar. ACM88 1
ACM88 Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 (edited) Hey, I have applied to FES but to the joint Anthro-FES program. I am guessing the results should be out soon enough. Have you had a formal interview? I applied for the FES PhD program, so I wonder how the admissions processes differ? I haven't had a formal interview, but I was informed by my POI that FES doesn't invite students as part of the admissions process, so I actually visited him and his lab on my own time back in December. I've just been feeling pretty anxious about the admissions and when they'll finally be released because so far this is the only school that I've applied to that has reached this point in the process. For all of my other schools, I have invites and interviews yet to do, so I don't really have anything else to bite my fingernails over. What about you? How do you feel about your chances/this process? And do you have any better ideas than I do about when results will be released? ACM - I think it does matter (your support from a Prof). Well, at least I can breathe a little bit easier knowing that support from a faculty member is actually helpful. It's interesting that you mention how Master's students should eat into the PhD slots if they apply (which makes sense), because when I visited I met 3 PhD students who had Master's from other institutions. I'll be finishing up my Master's in April and I hope that it's something that the adcom is looking on favorably. I have some apprehensions to sharing too much information about my visit online, so I can't say who my POI is, but I'm happy to say that the visit was very informal and comfortable. I met with him one-on-one and also had the chance to hang out with his lab and the other students in FES and briefly tour the campus. I lacked foresight and didn't meet with any other professors while I was there, so I'm hoping that doesn't shoot me in the foot, but overall it was a good visit. (*knock on wood*) But overall, I would say that it was a very useful and insightful visit. Edited January 30, 2013 by ACM88 Vader Was Framed 1
mirabeau11 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Just saw on facebook that someone has been accepted---unclear as to whether it is PhD or Master's or in what program.
ACM88 Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 Congrats to them! But this definitely makes me way more anxious now. I wish I didn't know!
ACM88 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Well, from what I can tell from the Yale FES posts in the Results Search from previous years, decisions should be announced either this week or next. I'm so nervous!!!
ACM88 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 Hey everyone, I think decisions are out now, but not updated on the online applcations yet, so keep an eye out for emails and phone calls! Good luck!
colorless Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 What about the combined degree (anthropology & fes)?Any news? There is a post on results page.
ACM88 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 What about the combined degree (anthropology & fes)?Any news? There is a post on results page. I'm not sure, I only know about the FES PhD program. I think it's likely though; I would expect them to have all if their PhD results decided around the same time.
whatshername Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Hi, I applied to their MESc program. Does anyone know any information about it? Also, I have some questions about their application status page. Unlike other application systems that I use (they have displayed the word "application is complete"), they didnt explicitly show whether my application is COMPLETE, instead, they listed a bunch of materials and showed that all of them are received. I guess the application is then considered complete, right?
ACM88 Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 I don't know a whole lot about the Master's program, but from the Results Search you can tell that they typically don't release results until early/mid-March. As far as the application goes, yes, that's normal. They would likely inform you if there were missing materials and the "unofficial" status is administrative only. They only require official transcripts after you've been admitted and accept their offer. I hope that helps! Good luck!
whatshername Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Thanks for your info ACM88. I am a little bit nervous about the results though they are not likely to be released until mid march. However, I do see one post on the result search page concerning the mem program.
whatshername Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Hey, Yale FES just updated their blog recently, indicating that they have adopted a rolling process and all admission results should be released by the first week of March. Finger crossed and good luck!
Darth_Nadir Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 (edited) I heard back from FES on the 4th. Edit: MESc Edited March 7, 2013 by Darth_Nadir
Rapang Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I applied to the joint anthro/fes program and emailed Anne Underhill from Anthropology. She said I should be hearing back in the next couple days
ACM88 Posted March 10, 2013 Author Posted March 10, 2013 Hi everyone, So, since I started this thread way back when and I noticed it getting some new, recent action, I thought that I would chime in and try to bring it full circle. It's my understanding that Yale FES expects/expected to have all of their results out by mid-March, which is just around the corner at this point. I imagine that most people have been given some sort of notification, even from other schools, so I wanted to check in. How have things turned out for all the aspiring Yale FES'ers on TGC? Any ideas yet about where you'll be in the fall? Thanks for sharing! And as always, if you haven't heard back yet and your still on pins and needles, I will continue to wish you the best of luck.
lawman89 Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Does anyone have any idea of how PhD graduates from Yale FES do? What are salary expectations and do many end up unemployed? I have a graduate degree in the same discipline from Cambridge and graduated with distinction (but I am America). I think I am a good candidate for this program, but Yale's employment statistics aren't very helpful. It's my fear I would do the program and spend 6-7 years saving nothing and then graduate unemployed or have to take a 40k post-doc. Anyone have an special experience or knowledge about this subject? Thanks!
