I just had a campus visit last week and met with 6 faculty members for 30 min interviews. Is it customary to send thank you emails to each of them?

I think it is customary. I just sent a short thank you note to my POI thanking her for speaking with me and showing me around campus.

Yeah, I think it's best to send them. If you can put something in there to remind them of what you talked about, so much the better. For instance, someone talked about an article I should look into, so I looked into it and thanked her for it in the email.

Did you know who you were interviewing with beforehand and if so, did you read many of their pubs?

Yes, I would recommend sending little notes expressing your appreciation that they took the time to speak with you. It's just good manners :-)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I sent each of them an email and thanked them for their time and answering my questions. A few of them have already responding saying something along the lines of “it was a pleasure meeting you and good luck”.

Caffine – I found out who I was interviewing with the day before. I didn’t have time to read their pubs, just overall research interests.

I think it's good manners -- just keep it short and write it in a way so that they don't feel the need to respond (unless you want to follow up on something).

Also, don't forget to thank the great admin staff people that probably put the schedule together, made the appointments, process/help you fill out your expense report, and maybe even helped you make the travel plans!
